as a filipino who came to canada when I was 10...

here's something that might actually answer the question:
- the pressure was on to fit in. my mom was already educating us about canada, north american culture, to the best of her ability. i still remember her showing me photos of downtown van and stanley park and newspapers that relatives have brought back from canada a few months before moving here.

- english was in the curriculum since grade 1. 8am-11am = courses taught in english, one class in "filipino", then 1pm-4pm = courses taught in chinese. yes, tagalog was treated as a separate course, much like french or spanish here. i was kicked out of ESL when I came here because I had the vocab and grammar right. i just had the thick ass accent.

- my parents' goal was for a better future, work hard, earn wealth, live better life. we didn't come here because we had obscene amounts of money to buy property and lambos.

This. As a second-generation Filipino-Canadian myself, my parents also came to Canada with not much money and were under pressure to either "make it or break it". They didn't have ANY safety net, and not many connections. You either work hard and succeed, or fail. And in the 80s (when they came here) that meant assimilating to "Canadian" culture - namely learning English and adopting Canadian customs - as well as work your ass off and save money in order to build a better future.

IMO the quality of immigrants in this time period are very different, on one hand you have lower to middle-class people who want to make it and care about their new country, and on the other hand you have people that are literally too rich to give a fuck and don't HAVE to assimilate or even have any respect for Canada because they have the money to live anywhere they please... again, IMO, it's not about being "Chinese", because I have many Chinese friends who also hate the wealthier Chinese because they make all Chinese people look bad, but rather the mentality that wealthy people - ANY wealthy people from ANY background - have of "I have money, so I don't have to care, fuck you" have. The general consensus is that mainland China went from being a poor, agrarian "peasant" demographic to one of the world's wealthiest countries without the necessary cultural experience in between that for people to be wealthy with dignity and class.

And you're on crack for thinking that Chinese aren't being "well-received" in the Lower Mainland at least, like someone else said above our politicians bend over backwards for foreign money and are not above screwing over working-class and middle-class Canadians to make a quick buck. If the government was truly "discriminatory" against the Chinese, half of the problems going on in the Lower Mainland (housing market, brain drain, people buying Chinese DLs and having them accepted by ICBC despite RCMP protest) wouldn't be going on right now.

Asian_XL let's be honest...if HK didn't have British influence and TW didn't have Japanese influence, chances are they'd also be defecating in public too.

Look at how many politicians learned 'Gung hey fat choy'(back in the day) and now 'gong xi fa cai' to appease the Chinese. Do you see any other cultures pandered to like the Chinese?

I really don't think that has anything to do with pandering to Chinese wealth

On the other hand, when it comes to anything Chinese, its always 99% negative news.

I wonder why? Why Filipinos are so much well received whereas the Chinese and Indians have to face hard prejudices and negative associations.
Honestly, I can totally see why you've started this thread, but you should really look outside the box.

In a way, all ethnics here in Vancouver are equally welcomed, and it's the bad apples that ruins and taints their respective ethnic groups.

Heck, here on RS, some well known bad apples of the filipino community includes the Status105 who rips around in fart-cans and evoked a series of car vandalism mayhem.

Or what about the yearly filipino scammer ladies that pesters you for donation to some phony cause?
http://www.revscene.net/forums/62735...couver-16.html

Back to point, with China's population of 1.4billion, there are bound to be a few millions of bad apples, and when enough of them make it out to different parts of the world, China's image of the people becomes degraded.

So at the end of the day, don't get so butthurt over Chinese negativity on the media cuz it'll be a while before their image improves.

Is it even a hard question to answer? Cultures, my friend, cultures.

They assimilate better, plain and simple. They are the traveling townies of the world, you can find Filipinos in countries you would never expect. It's the service economy they have where they produce folks who travel abroad and work in differing countries, they have it down to a science, and they do it well.

I think the main point is their ability to assimilate, and their welcoming nature. I think it's also that most of the Filipinos that come here tend to be middle to lower middle class, which means they actually work in regular jobs, they come here to build a future working much like any of us here. The Chinese immigrant in Vancouver is an entirely different beast, generally coming from a wealthier background, they tend not to work, and they tend not to want to assimilate or become "Canadian" per se.

I think that's the main difference.

it is probably because there are too many Chinese people like you...(i.e. often ignorant, arrogant self praising of your own culture)
I am Chinese too and there are many things I am proud (and sometimes ashamed) of our country and cultures. However I won't be bragging about it, and when I talk about it, I'd do it in a more humble way.

There is a saying that goes "people don't hate you because you are Chinese, people hate Chinese because of people like you"

Haven't voted, but of the three options, I've never been treated poorly by Filipinos. Maybe its a demographic/class issue?

Please don't take my post seriously or offensive, in general Chinese people who are kind and warm hearted, also Filipinos are in general good people too. It has nothing to do with whatever influence. It was just the OP is being a dick head comparing different culture and believe his own people are the best. Willing to learn and willing to adapt to the Canada culture is the thing, Vancouver is just filled with too many Chinese and many cannot speak English.
