Police continue to investigate a serious accident at the intersection of Goldstream and Peatt Road which claimed the life of an on duty RCMP officer.

The collision happened around 3:30 am this Tuesday morning.

32-years-old Cst. Sarah Beckett, of the West Shore Detachment in ‘E’ Division passed away from injuries she received in the crash. She just returned to duty after being on maternity leave.

Chief Superintendant Ray Bernoties, the Island District Commander, described the West Shore RCMP officer as a popular officer who leaves behind a young family.

The driver of the pickup-truck is in custody and a criminal investigation is ongoing. Saanich police will be investigating the collision to ensure impartiality.

While still unconfirmed, early reports indicate alcohol and speed was involved.

Beckett has been with the RCMP since 2005 and spent all of her 11 years of service on Vancouver Island. Serving in Port McNeill, Langford, Colwood and the Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crimes Unit.

She leaves behind her husband and two young children.

The West Shore RCMP released the following statement:

The RCMP is deeply saddened to inform the public that earlier this morning a police officer with West Shore RCMP was killed while on duty, in a motor vehicle collision in Langford.

The fatal crash investigation remains under investigation and therefore no additional information can be released at this time.

Multiple notifications remain underway in connection with this tragic event and we will not be confirming the name of the deceased member at this time.

We will not be releasing any further information in advance of that press conference.

Intersection expected to be closed until 2pm.

Oh man the rcmp officer being female just makes it all the more devastating.... ???

Drunk drivers need to be severely punished, especially if they injure, or in this case, kill others

RiP

My thoughts are also with her family.

An acquaintance of mine, an RCMP constable, posted this pic of a memorial ribbon on his FB profile:

The suspect fled the scene, was apparently apprehended this afternoon.

No reports yet on gender, age, etc. of the suspect from what I've read.

Undoubtedly, the man/woman responsible is going to be in deep shit.

Killing a police officer is a first degree murder charge.

the system failed. again.

and then there is the collateral damage:

now we have to wait and see what the outcome will be here and whether justice will be served :flamemad:

18 months for criminal negligence only? What the fuck?

Hopefully since alcohol was involved the Crown will try harder than only pursuing a slap on the wrist.

white rocket 04-05-2016 01:28 PM

Just terrible :(. Dedicated RCMP officer with a young family who just return from mat leave? Alcohol and speed a factor for the other driver? It can't get any worse. Actually wait, it can. Douchebag gets a slap on the wrist.

I'm always hoping for the best but always preparing for the worst; which is no justice for the victims.

I remember that story. Fucking asshole. Uses papers to block one side but looks square into the camera blue steel.

68style 04-05-2016 01:44 PM

That's the precise reason those assholes run away from the scene, they can't prove after the fact when they were drunk so that whole part of the charge goes out the window and it just becomes vehicular manslaughter or even less.

Also, this is sad for me to see because the Crown Vic's should have all been retired already but funding issues and backups on installs have greatly inhibited the ability of various regions to afford and put into service the new Interceptor... which is FAR safer in collisions than the Crown Vic.

RIP Constable.

Simply put if you speed and kill or put someone is serious injury you simply get stoned to death or death on a cross like Jesus. After all if you are sorry and ready to face your sin do it the same way Jesus did.

Not for car accidents... but as mentioned if this were drunk driving they should be charged severely regardless if the victim is an officer -_-

As for people being charged more severely when their illegal actions affect officers, officers should face more severe penalties when they fuck up, instead they're given a slap on the wrist
