Large Fuel spill spotted in English Bay

A large fuel spill was spotted today in English Bay.

Diesel fuel.

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Fuel has spilled into English Bay, causing a slick near the mouth of False Creek.

The spill is diesel, according to the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO). Because of the fuel type, it won’t be recovered.

They won’t be working to find out where it came from and say there’s no environmental impact.

Bryce Westlund was flying a tour above the area for SKY Helicopters.

“It was… funneling out of False Creek, it looked like. Not sure if it’s from a big tanker or something else, but [it’s] fairly large,” he tells us.

DFO says the fuel will be allowed to dissipate on its own.

About one year ago, there was a slow response to a bunker fuel spill in English Bay. All levels of government promised an improved response the next time.

That would be one epic bonfire from lighting up the diesel spill.

A big fire and a big stink.

Optimization of diesel oil biodegradation in seawater using statistical experimental methodology. - PubMed - NCBI

Seems that it will degrade and be useful to some form.

The article already started alluding in that direction:

I'd say the key takeaway is well summed up in the opening line of the abstract though:

Quote:
Petroleum hydrocarbons released into the environment can be harmful to higher organisms, but they can be utilized by microorganisms as the sole source of energy for metabolism.
So I'd disagree that there is "no environmental impact" as the DFO is trying to suggest.
