UPS package needs clearence

I need help with my order if anyone has done this before. I have a package I ordered overseas that UPS is currently being held in the states. They said I have to obtain a canada revenue agency business number and also email them my tracking number so they can clear the package. But this is for personal use, why do I need a business number? This never happened before, and usually they clear customs.

My item is around 350+$

update:

I googled the number that called me and this is what shows up from other people -

I am just wondering how they got my name

Ups is, here is the exact message. I recorded

"hello this is an important message from ups canada

we have a shipment arriving for "so and so"

UPS requires custom clearance and needs your broker information and canada revenue agency business number before we can clear it.

please email us back at broker@ups.com

and provide the following tracking number in the subject line "tracking number they gave me over the phone"

please note that if you want to authorize ups canada to clear, we require your canada revenue agency business number, ups is a full service custom broker and we would be happy to clear this shipment on your behalf, thank you for using ups and have a great day."

It's almost sounds like there needs to be some fees that have to be paid. So they wonder if you have your own guy you go thru. However they state at the end of that message they can clear the item. So I don't get why they don't and just collect the fees after

Probably because they have come to the realization that most people are getting wise to the fact that they rape you when their customs clearance is forced upon you. So now they are giving you the option of doing it yourself.

they charge like 50-100 dollars in order to clear a package through customs for you, even if that package might only have 10 bucks worth of taxes. It's ridiculous how much they gouge customers.

UPS and DHL are complete crap.

OP, there was a thread awhile ago explaining the process to pick up the package yourself from the border or YVR and clear it yourself. See if you can do that.

I found this webpage, it looks like a whole lot of steps to go through...is this something you're talking about?

Did you ship to a Business address or Residential address?
If it is business address, that explain the Business number inquiring.

Just tell them you don't have a CRA number and will pay the taxes.

will that work? Have you had to do this before? I don't get why they are asking now since the package is still in the states. It is coming all the way from israel. Shouldn't it come to canada first

they ask now before it crosses over because once it crosses over you have to pay them instead of possibly getting your on broker. So it makes sense they contact you before it gets taxed, per say.

If they brought it through the states be careful they aren't trying to double dip on the fees, a company tried to pull that on me once. Just go self pay the taxes and duty at the airport, call them and tell them you paid.

edit: I saw the part about it being a scam number, there's a bunch of ways they could've gotten your info, then they just call you and guess that you might have a package inbound.

fairly easy, Just go to ups office, tell them you need the necessary papers to self clear, once you have papers, go to the cbsa office near airport, fill out some papers, pay small fee, bring back to ups and provide papers, get your item. Much cheaper than paying their duties

My wife went through this for a package. She had to go to YVR or just before it to the UPS office to fill in the paperwork. FYI there is only one person staffed at the reception area and she was 0 help. Luckily another customer was there who was use to filling the documentation out helped her out.

Good luck

UPS offices are not open weekends. UPS is on Templeton so its like a 5 min drive apart from Customs Office.

CBSA and Customs Office is located near the Airport Tim Hortons (about a couple stores left of the Tim Hortons)

called up UPS and it's only $10 for me to clear my package.

How come you guys paid so much more?

Value of goods for me is around $80 cad.

I'm 90% sure they just spin a wheel. Wherever it lands, that's your fee.

I'm completely convinced UPS just makes up fees with duties. I've seen duties being collected at my house 3 times in the past and based on the worth of the package and amount collected, none of it made any sense at all.

Example 1 - Cell Phone car charger coming from Boston. Item is worth $20, $30 best if you want to argue it. Was charged over $30 CDN duties at the door.

Example 2 - Clothing from the UK, order was around $200. Duties charged were about $40

Can't recall the 3rd example but example 1 and 2 were both within 1 year of time and it just doesn't make any sense at all especially the car charger like seriously wtf. I've banned UPS for life, anytime I see a site ships by UPS i just don't order from them or pay more somewhere else to avoid the bullshit.

You could always avoid paying brokerage fees, and self clear the item, pay the owing taxes and pick it up at UPS after it's been released from CBSA.

Being an ex UPSer, you should see the operations inside the building. It's like Willy's Wonka Factory LOL

You're better off clearing your own packages or picking it up at PR/Blaine
