VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – It began as a pilot project and now it’s expanding across Metro Vancouver, proof that people here have an appetite for unique or at least different ways to get around.

Spare Rides is like a cross between a carpool and Uber.

“Basically, we connect people based on similar interests, similar workplaces, and similar routes. So we just basically facilitate the best shared-mobility experience you can get,” says developer Kristoffer Vic Hansen.

The company began a pilot project back in February and says the demand for it has exploded.

“One of the things we’ve heard from our users is ‘Why isn’t this service available in other places?’ So that’s what we’re doing, making it available in other places,” says Vic Hansen.

With a thousand members and growing, the service is now expanding across all of Metro Vancouver.

Aside from increasing the service area, the next version of the service will also allow you to plan further ahead.

Vic Hansen says most users have a set schedule.

“They’re going to work about the same time every and leaving work around the same time every day. So they really want to have one system to set it and forget it. That’s kind of what we’re making available in this next version — the possibility of setting up recurring trips so that you can set up your entire week.”

Spare Rides says right now, it is seeing an average of 200 passengers and 200 drivers a week.

This would be great going down Nordel as van pools get to cut the line at the end.
