His buyout would be about the same (~$0.3M like I said) because Burrows had a front-loaded contract while Higgins was paid the same every year.

The cap hit is AAV + Buyout$ - Salary

Higgins had 1 year remaining with a $2.5M cap hit, $2.5M owed in salary. The buyout would be 2/3 of remaining salary spread over double the term (so 1/3 each year for 2 years, or $0.833M

2.5 + 0.833 - 2.5 = $0.833M, which saves the Canucks $1.67M in cap hit this year, but they'll be penalized $0.833M next season.

Burrows had 1 year remaining with a $4.5M cap hit, $3.0M owed in salary. The buyout would be $1M x 2 years.

4.5 + 1 - 3 = $2.5M, which saves the Canucks $2.0M in cap hit this season, but they'll be penalized $1.0M next season.

That deal is not too bad he's a proven workhorse and he was asking for north of $4.5?

A lot of kids don't come to the draft if they're expected to be a late-round pick (he was projected to be anywhere from a mid-3rd to a mid-7th according to his prospect page). It's expensive to make the trip.

Canucks now have 11.3 million in salary cap room with today's buyout of Chris Higgins. Freeing up that room for Stamkos

I just got a good laugh at Benning's clueless reaction when he found out Lockwood wasn't there

I was at Kinetic clinics in Burnaby last year for my back injury. They specialize in sports medicine, and have a ton of clients who are NHL players. As I walked out of my appointment, I recognized the guy coming in after me. It was Lucic, and damn, he is a huge man.

It was around the time the Bruins didn't make the playoffs, so I didn't ask him any smartass questions. But he spends a lot of time in the lower mainland already.

It would be cool to see Lucic in a Canucks uniform. But if there is any chance that we could get Stammer, I'd go all in on that.

I don't think that's in doubt.
Everyone would love to see Lucic bring his game and his snarly personality to the Canucks, myself included.

What's making that impossible is the term he's asking for.
I'd be ok with committing a fairly big cap hit to him for a 2-3 year deal, at the most 4 years. He wants a long term (6+ years) big bucks contract that just doesn't fit in with the direction the Canucks should be going. That and I'd be willing to put money that he'll pretty much be an ineffective 4th liner by the time the last couple of years of a long term contract kicks in.

Play a whole season in Edmonton just to play with McDavid? lol

That being said, it's teams like Edmonton who can give Lucic the term and money he wants on his last contract.

Edmonton makes complete sense, they just need to move a couple guys which they have been trying and they should be a great team.

The last thing Edmonton needs is forwards. But on the other hand, Lucic is a completely different player than RNH, Yakupov, McDavid, Eberle, etc.

Still no idea who is going to play defense on that team.

It will sting a bit at the start, but I'm sure Canucks fans won't be crying in a couple years when Lucic' production drops and the Oilers are still paying him $6+ million a year.
