Tech giant Microsoft has opened a new office in Vancouver and with it comes 350 new jobs.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Premier Christy Clark and Mayor Gregor Robertson were on hand for a tour of the building.

While describing himself a ‘geek,’ Trudeau applauded the company for expanding its operations on the Lower Mainland. “It is an absolute thrill to see in action the technology that Microsoft has developed, tools that are accessible to people with visual impairments that help support students with learning disabilities among other applications

Trudeau took an opportunity to highlight Microsoft’s investment while encouraging other companies to follow suit. “I want the global business community to know that now is the time to invest in Canada. If you’re looking for a sound business climate, if you want to hire diverse, hard-working talent, if you’re seeking a partner who values and champions innovation — Canada is the place for you.”

The premier also stepped up to the podium and used the Microsoft announcement as a way to take a shot at the US presidential candidate Donald Trump. “In British Columbia, we choose very purposefully a very different direction and that is to open up our province to the best and brightest from around the world. Rather than build walls, we want to tear them down. If you are smart, we want you,” stated Clark. :lawl:

She further pushed the message of encouraging investments here by saying BC’s biggest resource was ‘people.’

Microsoft today will mark the grand opening of a new engineering facility in Vancouver, B.C., that will allow the company to more than double its workforce in the Canadian city three hours north of its headquarters in Redmond, Wash.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will be on hand this morning for the event at the new 142,000-square-foot development facility, at 725 Granville, which consolidates Microsoft’s Vancouver workforce into one place. Previously, its 350 Vancouver employees worked in three different offices. Over the past year, Microsoft has grown to 568 employees in Vancouver. The new Microsoft Canada Excellence Centre will accommodate approximately 750 people.

Microsoft President Brad Smith, speaking with GeekWire in advance of the event, said the opening of the new facility is big for Vancouver, but he also hopes it starts a movement towards a “Cascadia high tech corridor.”

“We want to also start talking about and really investing in this region not just as a single city or one important country but as a corridor that actually connects two big important cities and two countries,” Smith said.

Microsoft Vancouver employees work on apps like Skype and OneNote, video games like Gears of War, and apps for HoloLens.

Vancouver makes sense for Microsoft because of the city’s strong technology scene and several nearby universities that supply new talent.

In addition, Smith said Canada’s immigration policies are less stringent than the U.S., allowing Microsoft to pull top talent from all over the world for its Vancouver office.

Clive Wilkinson designed the Vancouver office, and it has two community rooms with a capacity of 150, numerous collaborative spaces and the Maker’s Garage: an area that focuses on experimental hardware and software projects.

Microsoft has been in Canada since 1985, and its operations there are headquartered in Mississauga, Ontario. It also has employees in the San Francisco Bay Area. Microsoft is “knitting together what I’d call a string of pearls on the West Coast of North America,” Smith said, but Washington state, with 44,000 employees and the company’s headquarters, remains the main hub.

And how many of these jobs are going to people from India who were denied H1B Visa's to the US? Look it up.

This place is merely a holding pen for them before they can be "internally transferred" to Redmond, WA.

350 new jobs is a start, and regardless of who are hired, the multiplier effect translates into dollars for Vancouver.

He's already shown he doesn't care about hiring the best people for the job over his social justice agenda when it comes to his cabinet. Designate it 50/50 men and women before the MP's are even elected. What would have happened only the least qualified/experienced women managed to get elected? Now he wants to hire foreigners over Canadians simply because they come from a disadvantaged background? Yay Progress

That's 350 more tax payers. If the US does not want them we will take them.

Agreed. I'm in the tech industry and this is the reason why MSFT opened up its offices here.

ppl in vancouver don't want to hear this. they want to present the idea that vancouver is a major tech hub - it's not. heads are in the sand.

Amazon, Microsoft, etc. are just taking advantage of the rules to their benefit.

Vancouver benefits from close proximity and lax immigration laws, big Seattle tech is taking advantage to fulfill their needs.
