When can and can't you do a U-Turn at an Intersection?

Always wonder about this...
Is there any general rule when you can or can't do a U-turn at an intersection? (i.e. with traffic lights)

I have seen intersections with signs saying "U-Turn Permitted", and "No U-Turn Permitted"

And that actually gets me confused...
If there are only signs that said "U-turn permitted", I would assume every intersection without the sign = no U-turn.
And if there are only signs that said "No U-Turn Permitted", I would assume every intersection without sign = Ok to U-Turn assuming it is safe.

So what is the rule when there are no signs at the intersection? Can you still do a U-turn assuming the traffic is perfectly clear and safe to do so?

Don't have time right now to look it up. But my understanding was this:

If there is a sign that says "U-Turn permitted" it is permitted, all other times it is not permitted.

This is contrary to the US where Unless there is a sign that says "U-Turn not permitted", it is permitted.

Basically from my understanding, you shall NOT U-turn at:
- any intersection with a traffic signal (so that just means the No U-turn sign at any signalled intersection is just redundant).
- a curve in the road
- on a hill where you can't be seen from 150 m away
- any other place with a No U-turn sign
- anywhere in a business district except for an un-signalled intersection
- and anywhere else local bylaw prohibits U-turns

So that means... U-turns are allowed, except for the above,
anywhere as long as you don't interfere with traffic, LOL

Quote:
Reverse turn
168 Except as provided by the bylaws of a municipality or the laws of a treaty first nation, a driver must not turn a vehicle so as to proceed in the opposite direction

(a) unless the driver can do so without interfering with other traffic, or,
(b) when he or she is driving
(i) on a curve,
(ii) on an approach to or near the crest of a grade where the vehicle cannot be seen by the driver of another vehicle approaching from either direction within 150 m,
(iii) at a place where a sign prohibits making a U-turn,
(iv) at an intersection where a traffic control signal has been erected, or
(v) in a business district, except at an intersection where no traffic control signal has been erected.

So if there are no signs at an intersection w/ traffic light = u-turn not legal (even if the condition is perfectly safe and you have unlimited visibility)

Yea, then I wonder why they put all those U-turn not permitted sign in the first place.

We don't see "right turn permitted on red light" sign on intersection because it is pretty much implied it is okay to right turn on red assuming it is safe, unless otherwise posted.

I think its for when they collect data and see maybe a spike in people pulling U-Turns at that particular intersection..

I know Richmond is a no-no, Vancouver not sure and Surrey has places made for uturns

Motor Vehicle Act section 168 as quoted above by Cone is correct. It applies all across British Columbia regardless of which City you're driving.

Richmond is just appeasing to stupid people that can't accept accountability and want a sign for everything.

Reminds me of a side story regarding needy people and signs. Guy at the gym is using the common hair dryer to blow dry his balls. There was a complaint made to the staff so staff tell him off. Guy says there's no sign saying I can't use the hair dryer for that. Use some common sense. There's also no sign to say you can't take a shit in the sink...

Yep, that's pretty much different. This is an the Washington State Driver's Guide book saids.

• U Turns – You should only make a U turn when it is safe. U turns should not be made on any curve or when approaching the crest of a hill when your vehicle cannot be seen by others. Some towns and cities do not allow U turns. Check with local police to be sure.

Is the only problem i think a lot of people dont realize is that they dont make which municipality is legal or not... but I think most just take it as its illegal unless its posted to do so okay

The intersection at King George and 64 ave has a sign allowing U turns for vehicles under 5 tonnes.

Goddamn "no uturn" signs in Richmond got me a ticket a couple of years ago. If it's not allowed in BC, then either don't put any of these signs up or slab one on EVERY intersection please. I know it is the driver's responsibilities to know the rules and abide by them, but these signs send a confusing signal as to whether it is legal or not.

Not sure what you're trying to say here but "I didn't know know you couldnt stab people" isn't a valid argument.
