Thinking of working at Starbucks

Just wondering if any of you guys worked there or currently working there. What is the environment like? Do you enjoy it? pros and con's?

It's fun to make up names for people and see the look on their face when they hear it and see it, its actually an art and sometimes we do it on purpose.

I worked there for 4 years while doing my undergrad. Its great for extra spending money, the hours were flexible, benefits were generous and the people were awesome - both my coworkers and the regulars. Going in to work felt like just going to hang out with friends and the actual work isn't work at all because it becomes very automatic after a while.

Of course a lot of that depends on the people and your location so ymmv.

if youre into coffee, you get like a free drink before, during and after your shift. once a week is like a bag of coffee beans. you get a starbucks stock every like 200 hours. tips are decent. you may work early as 5am to open. you also tend to spell like coffee after your shift too. depending on your location, they'll limit you to like 29 hrs a week so you dont get part time benefits.

When OP gets job at Starbucks, let's have an RS meet there to celebrate.

We'll call it 'Cars and Coffee'.

i am currently working at starbucks. been working for them 13 years. can't complain. you get free stocks based on their profits and another option to buy more by a max deduction of 10% off your pay cheque.

you need to meet certain hours to be eligible for health benefits. free lb of coffee or box of tea every week. 30% discount year round. certain weeks of the year you get 40% off (theres one going on right now).

if you don't want to work early or that late, pick a mall location. your hours will primarily based on mall hours, even if the store has its own entrance.

i applied for starbucks when I was in high school a long time ago but I eventually turned it down for something better. I know some are unionized and some aren't

the one that is unionized (the ones in safeway / supermarkets most likely etc.) paid around $15.50 , the non union ones (the bigger ones) were around $11-12. I found out about this when the safeway location said starting wage was almost $16 and my friend was getting $12 in a busier location

I am unsure if they paid safeway wages because it is inside safeway.....

ask about the wage in your interview.

Their prices have gone up recently............ just when I got used to their new star rewards scheme, too. Oh well, part of star dash promo this week, LOL.

Pretty hard choice, though, when McD's is giving out free coffee this week. The cups even come with the stickers for even more free coffee.

those ones in safeway/chapters/airport are licensed starbucks. the employees are actually not hired by starbucks but by the store they reside (ie. safeway does the hiring for the safeway starbucks). hence, they are unionized. any other starbucks would not be unionized.

and yes, they are paid safeway wages because they are safeway hired employees.

i dunno which starbucks you applied to long time ago, but i started with minimum wage + 0.25 on top

i think starting wage now at starbucks is like 11.xx

I am curious I assume he started working at 16...now 29...can working at starbuck can really make a living in Vancouver? I know the barista in HK get paid like CAD$7 an hr, people can't even pay rent with that. Store manager, however, can make up to around CAD$3400 a month.

i am no store manager, just a barista. i have declined numerous opportunities to move up because my time is tied to my main job in the morning working at translink. i do not have the available time commitment for starbucks.

i have actually surpassed the cap wage for a barista due to a system glitch and was only found from my latest manager lol.

as a barista/shift, i do not believe you can make a living in vancouver. the last time i asked a manager how much they made was at least 5+ years ago. they had told me that if you are hired internally, you made less than when hired externally.

as a manager, you can probably make a living. even better if you get your bonuses.

Vancouver's poverty line is $20.68/hr (2015 data) if you work FULL TIME.

I don't think working at starbucks will make you that much money.

I know people work at starbucks during weekend and have a full time job in the weekdays, but you need to have absolutely no life or need money to raise your kids or something. I did try some min pay part time in the weekend in my 20s, just not f*ing worth it when my regular job makes like $40 an hr.

Honestly the poverty line data is very arbitrary if you look at the way they justify it.
