Ask any enthusiast, the only Corolla that matters is the AE86. Made famous by a Japanese Manga Initial D it’s a fantastic machine that can deliver tofu faster than anyone. However, since then the Corolla has gone a bit beige and boring. Looking at the past few generations, it’s the go-to for people who just want a reliable vehicle. The Corolla Hatchback is here to change that, not only does it look good but it has excellent driving dynamics. Check out the video below to catch my thoughts on the brand new Corolla.
The back of the Corolla hatchback features very distinctive LED taillights that mimic the tips of cat ears. Sadly the two exhaust tips on the bottom are fake.
This may be the best angle of the new Corolla, the headlights with the LED J daytime running lights are absolutely beautiful.
From the side, it’s easy to tell it’s compact dimensions.
18″ wheels are standard on the top trim, XSE model. Wishing Toyota will bring back the XRS trim.
Do you remember a time when Toyota looks this aggressive?
The rear seats are quite tight, one of the smallest in the class so don’t expect tons of legroom. Headroom is plentiful thanks to the flat roofline.
Inside we have an 8″ infotainment system that’s mounted nice and high on the dash. It supports Carplay but lacks Android Auto, sadly the screen resolution is low, and the menu is slow. However, it is an improvement in Toyota’s previous system.
Overall the new Corolla hatchback is everything we love about Toyota, it’s going to be a reliable everyday commuter but what they have added here is flare. Something that’s been missing from so many of their cars. It’s great to see Toyota trying something new!
Big thanks to Toyota Canada for letting us drive the new Corolla for the week!
