i'm thinking of doing deeks peaks. it's somewhat close and a longer hike. but if i were to stay overnight.. where would i park my car? and is it okay to park overnight?

Most places are okay for parking overnight... especially if the trail is known to take longer than one night! Just watch for signs... if it doesn't say you can't park there, you're scott-free :p

Is that the one on the Sea-to-Sky hwy?

My one recommendation for an overnight is make sure you have a good mattress and sleeping bag.

Oh yeah... and a rope so you can put your food up a tree. Don't want bears coming around. ;)

well finally did the Grouse Grind for the first time on Sunday - awesome weather, awesome views - then my knees started cramping up :lol

I had knee problems years ago and apparently they're still there (not like I've been working them out too...) - they started giving me sh*t about 1/2 way up and I had to stop constantly at the steeper steps, but made it out - felt great - stretched and miraculously enough, wasn't hurting AT ALL on Monday at work!

definitely will try again in August, this time after working my knee out and wearing knee compressors

no idea what my time was but it had to be close to 2 hours since I had to stop so often

hmm. deeks lakes could very well be by that highway, i was just flipping through pages and it sounded interesting. it's under the "Howe Sound" region. i didn't end up going there, went to diez vista.. awesome trail but started too late in the day. another hiker suggested to turn around.. have some nasty bites from killer mosquitos

and about the knee problem.. it's a common problem and ice usually lessens the pain and soreness. might want to look into orthotics. sister spent thousand or so on them but she says her knees are a lot better now

i agree we should have a RS hikers meet.

I've got orthotics for my regular work shoes - cost me $300 ($200 subsidized by health insurance) and my back problems disappeared in 3 months!

Went to Diez Vista a few weeks back when we got the first heat wave. Views were awesome, but then they look pretty much the same all across the 10 views ;) Good news is that the floating bridge is now fixed on the south end of the lake. Not much of a "floating bridge" anymore though as it is only about 4 meters across now....the rest is a gravel road.

Also went down to some trails at Pacific Spirit Park two weeks ago; mainly it's a flat trail along the edge of the water that I went on. But don't let that deceive you...the rocks that are along the edge KILL your ankles.

Went up to the Grind today. Holy stinky people Batman! I'm not a fast hiker, so it took me a tad under 2 hours to complete the Grind. I don't think I'll ever head there again on the weekends because it's simply too crowded.

Yeah I hate it when I see that too....but then sometimes they could've just dropped it and not know.

i was looking at trailpeak last night. My friends and i are planning a 2 day backpacking trip up to maybe elfin lakes. still in the planning stages. It would be probally hike up, camp over night, then come back down.

For elfin lake, do you know if you have to provide your own gas for the gas stoves up at the hut?

With Sea to Sky closed for the next few days, I'm crossing my fingers that it would be open for Monday so that my friends and I can try out Chief.

i love hiking - been up the grind and the chief a million times. i really want to to do the lions - but apparently - because it's covered with snow - it's best to wait till sept/oct before you do it - but i'm usually busy by then.

went up to garibaldi lake for the first time last summer - in june, the trail was still covered with snow. stayed up there overnight in my tent, right next to the lake. awesome hike - cool place to explore. shoulda brought my gaiters, and i'm glad i brought more than just summer hiking gear. went up to elfin lakes with some alpine touring skis i rented from MEC in jan. was planning on staying in a snow cave - but ended up sleeping in the hut because it was nice and warm - AND, because i was super unfit, we ended up getting to the hut by sundown, no time to make a snow cave / quinze.

been on the West Coast Trail and the Juan De Fuca trail.... looking for more trails along the water as i HATE mosquitos...

the huts are heated by propane and they have propane stoves - so no, you don't have to bring gas up there.... but i carried my stove up anyways, to cook lunch, and just in case the hut was full.... this is in the winter though - i don't know if they open the hut in the summer.

Another year is upon us! Looking forward to this years hiking season. Last year I ended up doing two hikes in the snow during the summer time. Hopefully this year, it won't be bad.

Did you sign up already? I want to do this trail too, but am a novice hiker (pretty good fitness level though). Ive hiked a few mountains, and done some trekking through back country, but thats the extent of it.

did the west coast trail a few years back. had tons of fun, but it was the first real proper hike I did. I went through the army cadet system, so I was totally thinking, "wow, my backpack weighs 55lbs, I'm HARDCORE!". In retrospect, that was the stupidest thing...

I did it in 5 days, from south to north. totally lucky that the first few days was dry, and there was no rain for the 2 weeks prior to my trip, so the hardest terrain I went through had no mud whatsoever.

If I were to do it again, I'd totally do it in 7 days, take my time, and enjoy it. and definitely not have such a heavy pack again.

If you're worried, try the Juan De Fuca trail first. Work your way up. It's similiar terrain but the WCT is definitely harder (more hills/ladders/puddles)

The Nootka Trail was amazing. Definitely a warm up trail compared to the WCT.

WCT isn't just a hike, its one of THE local hikes. I want to do the WCT, but don't have the infrastructure or equipment. I am more of a day hiker :)

Actually I was looking at local trails, and hiking the upper areas of lynn valley looks interesting. Might make an attempt to Lynn Lake, Coliseum Mountain, or Norvan Falls later in the year.

With all the crazy weather recently, I'd think the trails will be hidden under a layer of snow. Gotta wait for the melt off.
