To short a stock, you borrow shares from your broker and sell it high. As the price of the stock falls, you buy it back at the lower price and return the shares to your broker. You keep the difference in price.

However, if you borrow shares from your broker, sell it and the price goes up, you have to cover. Meaning you have to return the shares you borrowed back to the broker. You buy it back at a higher price driving the stock price up even more.

Did anyone catch the INSANE climb on GGC? From $0.33 to $19.9 in TWO DAYS.

If you even spent just $1,000 on it...

this really depends
it shouldn't take that long.. about two to 3 business days.. if you're talking about the web broker.. then yah..
Active trader is a different story though

unit 08-10-2009 09:14 AM

TD Waterhouse sucks. Because of their trade commissions. It takes about 2-3business days to open. But if you've got the $$$ and push the guy who helped open the account, it can be done in a day.

Good news is that TOS has been bought by TD Waterhouse. Hopefully the rates will go down and they keep the platform.

TOS being bought by TD will probably increase its fees and dumb down the platform lol

how much exactly do u guys get charged if u don't have 100k at td?
it says 34 + .0x on a sheet i got
but on the webbroker it says $29? lol (well if it's under 30 trades a quarter...but how do they know?)
it does sound rather expensive unless ur an active trader..

anyways, looks like banks will be up tmrw pending disastrous news after cnbc released that john paulson is long banks...

Like I said the shorts are still going to get run over. Too much talk about this 5 - 8% correction makes me think either we get a very minor one or we got a normal correction which could takes us down to the 920 - 930 area but so far it doesn't look like it's going to happen. If retails sales coming in as expected or better I can see FAZ down a good 3 - 4% pre-market.

Jackwimmer 08-13-2009 11:29 AM

looks like great news today from LVS...

retail sales was down (even with the clunker program), intial claims up, foreclosures up...markets up...what does that mean?

People who try to pick the top and fight the trend will usually get hurt. I really love how it takes forever for traders/investors to turn bullish but very quickly turning bearish when they just see one piece of negative news.

Good thing I was bearish as hell on the double top of 1014 on the S&P. Not only did I make back my loss from a few weeks ago, I also made enough to pay off the POS apartment I just purchased.

wouwou 08-17-2009 08:26 AM

I am over 300 base points ahead on my futures

:D:D
