well I'm not a pro, but I'll tell you what I've learned.

The general rule of thumb for a "good" basketball shot is to have the following in your frame:

- ball
- faces
- some kind of action (going up for a shot, rebound, steal, etc)

it's hard to have all 3 at the right moment but that comes with practice, and it's something I'm always working on as well to make my stuff better.

you want to shoot very tight, meaning you want to fill your frame with the players as much as you can, and if you ever crop your shots later on, crop even tighter. I think you got the idea right from the shots you've posted so that's a good start. This could change, though, depending on your style and how the picture is going to be used. Some editors might want full-body shots but some might just want the faces to be clear and emotion-filled.

also, if you crop, don't cut off the limbs at the joint (elbow, wrist, ankle, knee, etc) because that'll make the players look disproportioned and odd-looking.

some of your shots seem blurry and soft, I'm guessing it's either because

a) your shutterspeed is too low, I try to do 1/400s as much as I can but if it's too dark I'll go down to 1/320s, but no less. For highschool you might get away with 1/250s cuz the players don't move as fast, just try and experiement with the speeds and you'll know. Bump up your ISO to 1600 to get your shutterspeed up and open up the lens to the widest setting possible to get as much light in as you can

b) you pan with your camera too quickly. try to follow the players using the center focusing point and time your shots without making any rapid movements with your arms.

setting wise, AI-Servo is pretty much a given, if your camera allows, seperate your AE from your AF, so you AF with your thumb and AE (taking a shot) with your finger, that way you can quickly focus then recompose, and keep the focus point in the same spot with out having the camera re-AF again when you want to take a shot.

so yeah, there's lots more, but these are just the general stuff. again, these are "guidelines", and some shots can work great without following these "rules", just as how some shots can work without complying to the "1/3rd rule". ;)

Senna4ever 02-02-2007 02:28 AM

Not bad...this is with your new XT? All 3 pics are a bit underexposed.

ForFoxSake! 02-02-2007 02:55 AM

Thanks, ya, they are underexposed...I didn't want to bump the ISO too much (I think they were taken somewhere in the 600-800 range), the aperture was wide open and the motion pics were at, I think, about 1/15th of a sec...was mostly just playing around trying to get the right motion blur.

And no, these were taken with the school's D70s :)

Senna4ever 02-02-2007 02:56 AM

Adjust the levels in Photoshop.

ForFoxSake! 02-02-2007 03:01 AM

ya I'm going to..(though I don't have PS at home). I have a thing against PS and avoid using it if I can :)...I'll adjust levels, and that's pretty much it. I'll monkey around w/ them tomorrow and let you know how it goes :D

RonaldTypeR 02-02-2007 08:11 AM

1st attempt :)

i was shooting at 1600iso...70-200f2.8 and i was getting between 1/250 and 1/400 shutter speeds. =| and this is with the new brighter lights in our gym =D

that's about right, I get the same lighting condition shooting in a friggin' UNIVERSITY gym. God SFU needs to open up that bright and beautiful new gym ASAP.

try sitting, don't stand. you can make the players look taller and make it seem like they're jumping higher by sitting down and shooting upwards.

no, leave it in AF, but set it to AI-servo and use Custom Function to seperate your AE and AF. I don't know how you'd do that with an XT.

Meowjin 02-14-2007 01:32 AM

btw no offense to the 30d... it has worst AF than my 20d.
