Okay fine, lets start off with your clear misunderstandings of politics and a tad on the legal system. If the goverment decides to say, put up pay parking areas, why should you not pay it? You're clearly in violation of the law! And what happens when you don't pay it? Collection agencies, court, etc... So why should it be any different for a parking space at UBC? Do you not also realize that you are neglecting not only UBC but you are also neglecting everyone else who is paying for their ticket? Now, you were talking about being fair, how is that even REMOTELY fair? Because you're a cheap ass and won't pay but everyone else has to? Let me think about that and see if I change my point of view.

If you don't want to pay, SIMPLE: Just don't park there; Utilize your UPass. Other than that, follow the god damn rules or pay the fine that you so richly deserve.

ok, its my fault, I said I wanted an engaging and articulate response. I completely forgot to ask for intelligence... even if i did, I have my doubts as to whether you would be able to deliver.

where to start??...hmm, well firstly, is this response even to me? is it? because 1/ i never said he shouldn’t pay for it. which makes your entire post pointless. I said he has the right to challenge its validity. let me put it in language you can understand: if he doesnt think its fair, he should go through the steps that are needed to voice his opinion.
2/ 'cheap ass'? this makes me chuckle, because I pay for parking all the time. A champion of rights, isn’t necessarily a law breaker.

I was going to continue, but honestly, your post doesnt deserve anything more than the above. no offence. But thank you for a longer reply. A for effort.

Wow, I didn't think this was possible but I think I actually lowered my IQ by reading your post. Your point is utterly ridiculous! Challenging the ticket, it is pretty obvious that in order to get a ticket, you must've done something wrong. In the very slim chance I am wrong, he's asking for a quick out. He isn't asking to challenger the system, he isn't asking for changing the rules, he's looking for a fucking loop hole in the system where he can cheat it and get away with it. Now tell me, how dumb do you feel now?

haha... I've clearly got you pretty revved up...
and i can see your concern about lowering your IQ, in your case that would be a disaster!
but there you go again with your incorrect info. did he ask for a loop hole, or a way to cheat the system? or did people just respond with that?

get you facts straight. youre now starting to waste my time, but i will humour you for another post or two. If you have nothing else to say, feel free to stop posting.

thanks for the tip dude. I was starting to get that impression myself.

UBC is being sued for their parking tickets anyways... its a class action suit actually.

jwee 01-17-2007 10:01 PM

its not that i dont have money to pay or im just being unreasonable. but really, im a ubc student, im paying so much overpriced tuition, for some really bad profs and bad equipment. I have to buy all those stupid books and Personal response clicker which cost $45. i really dont see the point of that. I personally think its just a way for the university to earn more money from us poor students. Im paying so much to them, yet they are threatenin me to NOT LET ME REGISTER FOR MY NEXT TERM COURSES because of these stupid parking tickets, not to mention that their parking rate is SO HIGH. I just think that UBC is all about money now and that really makes me angry.

anti_rice 01-17-2007 11:39 PM

Pay parking is more of a way to deter people from driving rather then making money. If the rate wasn't that high then more people would drive, the campus would get congested with cars etc. there's only a limited amount of space. Just like downtown where the city's trying to increase the price once again to control the amount of vehicles and believe it or not, it's working there are fewer cars in downtown.
jwee you seem to have a problem with UBC in general. maybe it's time to try a different university. SFU???

Make translink your primary mode of transportation. I bus all the way from poco everyday at like 6am and you don't see me needing a car.

Bottom line really is, if you can't afford to drive to school then don't. Join the other 99% of students who can't afford to drive and bus the school. Thats why they gave you an u-pass.

slammer111 01-18-2007 03:53 AM

If you really live that far, an alternative method is to park near UBC and bus the last bit. Save parking $, avoid tickets, and use that U-pass too. 3 birds with one stone. w00t.

Parking is so damn expensive as it is, as students we already are dealing with ridicilously high tuition. an average semester costs a student 2gs, i think we should have the right to argue a couple of parking tickets. the universities are money hungry bastards, if someone can find a way to "beat the system, cheat, lie and scam your way"... (out of parking) im all for it!
$2000 is really cheap man, school in Canada is "rediculously" underpriced.

A judge has found that UBC has been unlawfully issuing parking tickets since 1990 and has ordered that more than $4 million in fines be paid back to thousands of violators.

In 2006 B.C. Supreme Court Justice Richard Goepel certified a class-action lawsuit on the issue after representative plaintiff Daniel Barbour filed suit against the university.

Barbour, a Vancouver chartered accountant, was angry when his two-door Jaguar was impounded after he left it in a parking lot on Wesbrook Mall on the UBC campus.

He was legally parked at the time but was ordered to pay $200 to get his car back after the university alleged he’d violated the parking regulations on at least one other occasion.

Up until the start of the trial, UBC argued that the parking fines were lawfully collected under the University Act but then admitted that the scheme was illegal.

It then submitted that there were “private law justifications” for the regulations, but in a ruling released Monday, Goepel said that those arguments were not sufficient to uphold the fines.

The judge said that UBC retains the power to remove vehicles that are improperly parked and to recover costs incurred, but he noted that in most cases the fines are far in excess of the damage caused to UBC by the miscreant parker, and said that those penalized trusted that UBC had the power to impose the fines.

“There is something fundamentally unfair that those good citizens should not recover the money that UBC had no right to collect in the first place,” he said in ordering restitution.

“I’m extremely pleased,” said Barbour. “The court has recognized that UBC has been unlawfully collecting fines and unlawfully towing cars solely because people had unpaid tickets. The court has found that those are both illegal activities.”

Barbour added that he likes the university but “they have to stop this particular practice. I certainly know professors out at UBC, students out at UBC, and they’ve all had their cars towed in this sort of fashion. And they’ve been rooting me on.”

Sharon Matthews, Barbour’s lawyer, said there were still several issues to be determined, including setting up a system for people to come forward to be paid.

Court heard that from January 1990 to December 2005, a total of 432,847 traffic tickets were issued and more than half remain unpaid. From September 2000 to March 2006, violation notices were issued to 115,456 licence plates. Only 20 per cent of violators were responsible for nearly half of the violation notices.
