It's not fair to just bash the chicks, because we are all shallow, just at different things. We are no less shallow on chick's appearance. Besides if we do not value the attractiveness of the chicks as much, they wouldn't use that as their value to draw advantages to themselves, such as money and material goods from wealthy guys!

But regarding our preferences to pick the ones whom are attractive to our standard, it is simply in our genes to choose a "partner" who have traits which would give us a better chance in resulting better offspring for the survival of the species. Attractiveness is actually nothing more than that.
