questions about juicers

looking to buy a juicer, but not sure what to look for exactly ie. whats a good power range, capacity, how easy to clean.

anybody had any experiences good or bad with them? how is a juicer better vs. a powerful blender??

i'll probably pick one up maybe at costco, or maybe zellers, home outfitters, linen n things maybe. those are all the stores i can think of off the top of my head.

I think this is more appropriate for the food forum

If I were you, stick to the stainless steal juicers. They get a better yield out of the juice. I used to have the JuiceMan and a Hamilton Beach one.. they're ok, but the pulp is still very moist. The point of it all is to get the pulp as dry as you can so you've extracted as much out of it as possible. Not to mention the stainless won't get carrot/beet stains on it, which is an eyesore, but it does it's job.

Invest in one so you don't have to replace it at after a couple of years.

Juicer vs Blender:
Blender: Just blends everything together, and keeps all of it in tact. The fibres stay in the juice and it's a fraction harder for your stomach to absorb it as quickly as it can.

Juicer: Shreds the vegetable or fruit, strains out the fibres and the seeds (which will make your juice bitter) and extracts only what you need out of the juice: the nutrients and only a fraction of the pulp/fibre. Your body will naturally absorb it quicker than a blended drink because it's already eliminated all of the fibre, which will just make you more regular.

If you have any more questions feel free to PM. I've been juicing for about 2 years almost daily now, and my sister got me into it and she's been at it for about 5 years.

i have a braun from the bay. Works well. I bought it for carrot juice. But after seeing the cost of Carrot Juice at Costco vs buying a bag of carronts, peeling, washing and cutting, then cleanup; i now hardly use it....

bag of carrots $6..... 3 x 3ltr 100% carrot juice at costco = $7.... lol

i ended up buying this hamilton beach one from zellers for $89.99. so far so good, its just strictly a juicer so i can't put ice or anything else like that (i think). i just bought some bags of frozen fruit at costco for about 7.40/bag and just throw them in. pretty good in taste and lots of pulp comes out. i've had it for about 2 weeks or so and its workin great, no complaints so far.

you never had to peel/cut. just wash them and that's it. the most nutrients are found just underneath the skin. *shrug*

Hey there, I know quite a lot about juicers.

Get Breville, and make sure the motor is 600W and above -- increased spin speed means you get more juice out of the vegetable/fruit.

The advantage of using a juicer, is that it separates all the nutrients out of the plant. When you just eat a plant whole, much of the nutrients (in liquid form), are trapped in cellulose, which is the indigestible "fiber" of the plant. I have read previously on some online magazine that up to 20% of nutrients could be wasted this way (I have no source however).

The other advantage of course is that you save tonnes of time and increase your nutrient uptake.

I recently upgraded my juicer by buying off someone on craigslist -- it was brand new, sealed in the box and never used. Bought it for $60 and it was still selling online for $250!

I was at the Costco in Richmond last night, and noticed they were selling Vitamix juicers. They're not always available, and they were $500! I believe these are industrial strength juicers. Any comments?

Breville's line of products can be found at any department store i.e. London Drugs, Sears, The Bay, Zellers etc.

oh stupid me...

didnt even see "find a retailer" on the site till now

Araaadi 12-22-2010 11:13 AM

My work homeoutfitters have lots of breville juicers, and tomorrow we have a special 25% one item in the store. That's like 299.99 -75bucks so that's around 225 plus taxes for a breville. We also have a sharper image juicer for 129.99 that you could also use the juicer on, its not as great as the breville but it does the job and is a lot cheaper.

If you plan on going to Metrotown, don't drive. The parking lot is a mess.
