You're right... the fine should be lower for excessive... then I can drive 150km/h and get a lower fine, instead of doing 110 and getting a higher fine!

"official military policy states that motorcades carrying important people should travel noticeably faster than the posted speed limit. Kinda blows the "road engineers suggest that the posted speed limit is the safest at which a vehicle can travel" theory out of the water..."

As someone who does escorts for IPPs..yes they do over the speed limit and the escort teams do at least twice their speed. The danger of potential attack is greater than exceeding the limits. Besides, if you have actually seen their escort package, they are driving armoured and specced vehicles, drivers are advanced skill trained, all side roads are blocked, all other traffic is stopped or moved aside and lots of Cops with guns will ram vehicles out of their way if they don't move. Not remotely similar to driving in "normal traffic" that the engineers had in mind?

Basically the point that I am trying to make is that even your average driver isn't going to go flying off the road doing 20 over on the average freeway.. I'm sure you have driven between Jasper and Edmonton.. is 110 really the maximum safest speed? No. Improve driver training, step up enforcement (even speed) at intersections. A properly trained driver will slow down for hazards such as intersections and we can all move between them faster.

Here's another thing - A driver is not allowed to use discretion as to what the safest maximum speed is on a wide open straight freeway, but when approaching an offramp where the maximum speed is 90 but the recommended speed is 60, it's all up to them.

What's my point? Drivers are allowed to use discretion when the maximum speed is likely to toss their SUV off the edge of the road, but not were 40+ over is probably not going to cause any harm.

Step up enforcement where it is dangerous according to common sense (intersections) and leave people alone elsewhere.

Couple of questions regarding dangerous intersections:

Another thing - I assume the TSMIT system (or whatever it's called) guides officers as to where to set up speed enforcement. The intersection of HWY1 and Millstream Road is listed as a dangerous one on ICBC's website and I assume that the enforcement I frequently see there is because of this listing. What confuses me is that it's not an intersection - it's an overpass..

Veterans Memorial and Goldstream Ave is also a dangerous intersection. Go ahead and blame the 60km/hr speed limit, but don't overlook the fact that there is NO red light on any of the left turn lanes.

Tismit only captures crash stats from areas where the RCMP actually works. Not all RCMP units are entering data into Tismit and not all Hwys in the area are actively policed by RCMP. ICBC has different data than Tismit as theirs is collected from all Police forces in BC. My area stops at the top of the Malahat at Aspen Rd and the intersections are not in my area. Sorry I cannot comment on the specific locations.

I'd thought I'd bump this thread because I ended up disputing the ticket.

The cop never showed up in court, but I wanted to dispute with the officer because I was pissed that he said he'd raise the fine if I disputed.

Soundy 02-03-2009 07:51 AM

What a twit. Probably knew you'd win it and he couldn't make good on his threat to increase the fine, so he decided not to show just to make you waste your time.

You should send him a bill for the time you spent going to court. Then send him to collections when he ignores it.

Same thing happened to me. Last March, I got a ticket for not having my front plate properly mounted and for not displaying the proper address on my DL. He crossed off the second offense and said he would charge that second offence if I disputed the ticket.

Not only did I dispute the ticket, I called him and left him voice messages on his work line saying I was disputing the ticket and to see him in court. Well, he never showed, me and 3 other people got our tickets thrown out.

He might have just been busy. When I disputed my ticket, the officer told me he made a mistake and was going to plead no contest. He was sorry about the trouble and I called him the week before the court date. He called me back when he got into the office (which was the day before the court date) and told me exactly what was gonna happen. Basically, he said when I show up and see him, then we shake hands and I can go. Reason was because he said if for some reason he couldn't attend and I wasn't there, then I am automatically guilty and I'd have to pay the fine. He just wanted me to be there to make sure that he was there before I left. If he didn't show up, then I could just plead not guilty. So what I'm saying is that they are officers and anything can happen, so just cause they don't show up, it does not necessarily mean they are scared of you and don't want to show up.

Begs the question why it gets the highest fine...

and what percentage of serious injuries? you don't have to kill sometime to (essentially) end their life.
