As someone who does escorts for IPPs..yes they do over the speed limit and the escort teams do at least twice their speed. The danger of potential attack is greater than exceeding the limits. Besides, if you have actually seen their escort package, they are driving armoured and specced vehicles, drivers are advanced skill trained, all side roads are blocked, all other traffic is stopped or moved aside and lots of Cops with guns will ram vehicles out of their way if they don't move. Not remotely similar to driving in "normal traffic" that the engineers had in mind? | Basically the point that I am trying to make is that even your average driver isn't going to go flying off the road doing 20 over on the average freeway.. I'm sure you have driven between Jasper and Edmonton.. is 110 really the maximum safest speed? No. Improve driver training, step up enforcement (even speed) at intersections. A properly trained driver will slow down for hazards such as intersections and we can all move between them faster.
Here's another thing - A driver is not allowed to use discretion as to what the safest maximum speed is on a wide open straight freeway, but when approaching an offramp where the maximum speed is 90 but the recommended speed is 60, it's all up to them.
What's my point? Drivers are allowed to use discretion when the maximum speed is likely to toss their SUV off the edge of the road, but not were 40+ over is probably not going to cause any harm.
Step up enforcement where it is dangerous according to common sense (intersections) and leave people alone elsewhere.
Couple of questions regarding dangerous intersections:
Another thing - I assume the TSMIT system (or whatever it's called) guides officers as to where to set up speed enforcement. The intersection of HWY1 and Millstream Road is listed as a dangerous one on ICBC's website and I assume that the enforcement I frequently see there is because of this listing. What confuses me is that it's not an intersection - it's an overpass..
Veterans Memorial and Goldstream Ave is also a dangerous intersection. Go ahead and blame the 60km/hr speed limit, but don't overlook the fact that there is NO red light on any of the left turn lanes. |
