Maybe a solar flare hit your ECU and messed it up. Or maybe the computer didn't like the scent of your air freshener and decided to commit suicide.

As for how much the job costs, it would depend on how long it took the auto-tech to isolate the problem. Probably an hour or two for diagnosis, and another hour for replacing the computer. The computer probably retails at some insane price like 600bux from Toyota I bet.

the techs at toyota are pretty good then. they open at 730 and they called me at 825. so that took about only 30 mins (minus the time for the guy to call me, all the paperwork, coffee and such)

on the work order, they just said "read the check engine light, replaced ECU" that's it. i guess it wasn't too hard, they just need to plug their computer into my car and it tells them what the problem is?

yeah...they pretty much just pull the code, then determine what to do to fix and remove this code. with your situation it was just replacing the ecu and programing the vin on to it.

get them to check the vacuum seal or something (cant remember what its called). my dads van had a very similar problem. It could also be a gasket, or ur leaking oil thru something.

time to revive this from the dead...

2005-2008 corolla/matrix have engine immobilizers with a chip built into each key... 03-04 did not have this, even tho the cars look the same...

the 2005-2008 corolla/matrix are gonna be recalled to have the computers replaced... just a heads up... :) atleast toyota cares enough to take care of these issues...

ps.. it's true.. the north american made cars just aren't teh same... that's why all my cars (they're ALL toyota/lexus) are made in japan...

Lol what? The recall was released 2 months ago. I checked with toyota already and not all cars are affected. (i.e. mine)

My matrix is 06 as well. But because it's a mass recall on a manufacturer defect, I don't think it matters if it's still under warranty. They will do the service for free, correct me if I'm wrong. If Toyota was smart and with their reputation falling due to recent defects, they should repair all defects for free regardless.
