Bus 237 final in 2 days and ENGL 101 final the day after. :ahwow:

Going into the 237 final with an 86%

Probably coming out with a B-. Thank you business bell curve you've once again fucked over the average man.

The curve isn't as hard as everyone thinks. Back when I took 237 (spring 2011), class avg for the final was very very low, ~60%. I was sitting at a B/B+ (got 8% above class avg for midterm but assignments were near perfect) and got 70% on the final and it was enough to boost me to an A-. So unless your class average is extremely high, you're sitting at a good position!

I'm guessing G-nerd was upset at having the bell curve having "fucked over the average" to imply that even though he is at a 86%, he will need to do even better to get a decent grade despite his excellent showing.

aha yup, Ali was my prof. The whole course was a joke. Landed my first MIS/IS related job this summer and found out that it's so much more interesting than 237 / Ali made it. Such a shame that SFU butchers such an interesting industry by teaching it in the most boring method possible.

Snugglez 08-10-2012 11:38 AM

I remember one time, Maryam went up to me during the 10 min break and asked me what my name was. I told her it was "David", my name is not even David.

I left the class to go to Subway and came back like 30 minutes later. She yells at me infront of the class and goes "David! where did you go?! I was going to use you for an example!"

Yushimi 08-10-2012 08:16 PM

Not sure if taking a max 6 courses next sem is a smart idea...LOLZ ... 5 still seems too crazy...

areyounoob 08-10-2012 08:27 PM

you must be really good at managing your time.

vyrospec 08-10-2012 08:47 PM

:ahwow: 6 courses, gl hf then

hypercube 08-10-2012 10:05 PM

I believe I have the same prof as you had. Her name though is Maryam Ficociello. Guessed she must have gotten married.

Anyways, the final was fair but that class was not really interesting. The hardware/software and networking chapter were the only thing really interesting. Everything post midterm was very very boring. I was considering concentrating on MIS but I am really contemplating if I should pursue it.

I heard this was a booming industry though ?

Could you tell what you exactly do and what qualifications you needed to get that MIS related job.

Does anyone know if marks get rounded up? Sitting at a 74.5% overall in one of my courses, but a B is 75-79. Will I get a B- then, or a B?

Really depends on the prof. If they're nice, they'll round it up. I was at a 59.5 and my kin 142 prof rounded it up to give me the C.

O God, seriously stressing out for Bus 254 final. This class has been such a headache for me. Lectures notes and homework have little correlation. The homework is 10 times harder.

20 people are supposed to fail this class according to the bell curve.

Fuck, looks like I'll see you guys next semester when I retake this course with a different prof.

My advice is to make sure you know the "why?" question behind all the chapters. Eg: ABC costing, high low method, variances. You'll pass if you just memorize how to do it and the steps, and if you're lucky and the test questions are the same format, you'll do really well. But the final long questions can be completely different than the sample questions etc. We had several questions where the students never saw before, but if they understood the reasoning and logic behind the course concepts, it was easy.

Variances (last chapter or 2nd last chapter) get a lot of people, so make sure you memorize your formulas and understand it.

Having talked to several professionals in the field, they generally agree to the fact that technology/computers aren't leaving us anytime soon, and with time, more and more improvements, upgrades, implementation will take place. That being said, a friend of mine that recently got into a small IT solutions consulting firm said that the industry isn't huge in Vancouver but it definitely is going strong. Toronto is the place to be for this industry. Do some informational interviews, research, etc., to learn more!

How I got the job...
Spoiler!

What I do at work...
Spoiler!

Feel free to PM me if you have questions, etc.

On a good note, I got an A in Bus 237.

My next semester classes :
