Buying from Amazon.com, things I need to know

Dunno where to put this ...so ........im planning to buy a laptop from amazon.com

Few questions:
If I buy from them do I have to pay taxes? Will telling them marking the shipment as a gift make any difference?
What courier do they use?

Thanks!

they won't ship electronics to Canada.

Check with its shipping page to confirm.

They won't mark it as a gift.

For books, they use USPS -> Canada post.

Also if you pick it up in WA you will be subjected to both taxes when you come back.

They won't ship it to Canada. The only thing you can do is have them ship it to Point Roberts or somewhere else close to the border.

Keep in mind, they will charge you WA tax, which I believe is 6.5%.

After that, when you bring it back across the border, you will have to pay GST + PST as well, which means you'll get taxed twice on the item.

So if the item is $500, Amazon.com will charge you $32.50 in tax. When you cross the border, they will collect another $60 in tax.

Amazon will ship a LOT of things to canada..... even electronics (it depends)

so just add what you want to the cart and go through the checkout process to see if it'll accept your address.. if they won't ship that item to Canada they will tell you

(also books are usually cheaper on chapters.ca)

sorry to bump this thread, but i figured i'd ask my question in here rather than start a new thread.

i was just wondering if any of you have had any experience buying things used off amazon.ca where other users can post their stuff up to sell? how is it different from just buying off amazon?

most importantly, will i get my stuff on time with no need to worry about my credit card information being exposed to these guys?

thanks, sorry for sounding like a newb.

I recently got something from amazon.com, not ca. Arrived from New York in less than a week. All the taxes were automatically added on so it goes through customs easily. Since you plan to buy from amazon.ca same thing just no taxes and and faster delivery.

Why would your credit card info be exposed to who?
If it's a big seller with a lot of feedback you should be safe... Just use paypal if your worrying about your credit card info being exposed to whoever.

I buy movies and random stuff once in a while from users selling through amazon. It typically takes longer to ship but it's just as easy to do and I haven't had any problems. Treat it like ebay and only buy from legitimate looking sellers.
