Oil Feed to turbos

Hi i've just been thinking about this,

now if i remember correctly most cars that are turbo charged from the factory have fittings with lines going to the turbo from the block, or even from the oil pan.

but when a person turbocharges a car that was NA, how do most people feed oil to the turbo?

Now some people drill bungs into the the oil pan right?
and i heard some people even get oil filter relocation kits with some extra lines to feed to the turbo?

so i just want to clarification on what most people do, what is safer and what is generally better.

thanks!

You need to drill/tap the pan or get a fitting for it for the drain from the turbo not the feed. For a feed people usually tap into the port where the stock oil pressure sensor is and T off of that or they run an oil filter sandwich.

Yup.

To feed a turbo, oil is usually taken from a T-fitting (or similar) from the oil pressure sender. Getting it out of the turbo is usually as simple as tapping and drilling a new hole in the oil pan and gravity feed it.

Just be sure to tap your return into the pan above the oil level.

Depending on the car, sometimes replacing the oil pan is really easy. You could pick a used oil pan, then have someone weld a proper fitting to the pan, then swap them. Also, some cars have factory oil return lines built into the block. On my 1990 miata, the motor was used as a turbo motor in different cars (323gtx), so there is a factory oil return that is capped off. Just have to take the cap off and feed back into it. There's also a stock oil feed and coolant feed that are capped off as well.

So what I'm getting at is there's tons of different options, just need to research the car a bit.

Lomak is 100% right.
all u gonna need is some bonjo bolts and a oil line to tap the oil pressure sender. forr return u couldd use the stock drain location or tap a new one specifically built for turbo oil return.. the 2nd option is cleaner. the oil filter method isn't necessary unless u have a huge powerhouse built. however you should have a tiny filtration for the oil lines going to ur turbooo.,

Make sure you don't run to much oil pressure to the turbo or you will get blowby. Small inline oil filter on the braided line is very recomended and possible a restrictor if you have to much pressure.

Berz out.

when you refer to a small inlie filter, something like a fuel filter but for oil?

the proper term is an oil line filter. Its a 1-way flow adapter for the oil line

if u got too much oil pressure, the oil will go blow-by, u will need a oil catch can or be prepared to have a shortlived engine/turbo.

I'm confused, how is a catch can going to fix excessive oil pressure?

Catch can is NOT for relieving oil pressure.. its for relieving pressure in the block.

Not 100% true.

On some applications (personal experience), we've had to connect a 'Y' line from the oil return line to the blow-by. in the blow-by we also attached a oil catch can. so in some sense, the catch can serve as a emergency oil pressure relief.

I've also seen in some cases people have drilled and tapped the block, just above the oil pan. Make sure you position this so it misses the oil pan screw holes.

yea stock blocks usually have oil return fittings on the block.

i think i'm just going to tap the pan. while it's off i'll also put some baffles in it.

does anyone know of a Increased capacity oil pan for the KA?

I'm not sure about a bigger oil pan, but you can always set it up to run a larger oil filter. Just need to find the proper thread pitch and diameter of the whole, run a stainless line to where you want and find a bigger filter with the right dimensions. I'll be running this sort of setup partially for the larger capacity, but also because the supercharger will be invading part of the space required for the oil filter.

You can find both kits and parts individually sold online, though I'm unable to remember where I found my setup.

However, if you're just looking for a larger oil pan, I don't believe they make one with a bigger capacity. Just be sure to tap the drain hole as high up as possible without running to issues as to where it screws in.

Don't really need to run a larger filter. the Nissan OEM one is quite large. it's like 3 times the size of an OEM 350z one.

Yea i'll just have to weld a bung in and a fitting for the oil return.

i'll probably get Captain Bondo to do it.

Or you can just dry sump the engine.. which probably is not a bad idea considering how much you are going to mod the engine already.

If he's going ka-t a dry sump probably isn't in the budget, it's not a cheap undertaking.
