Thats what I think they did to this news clip personally, It seems so..sketchy lol like the interview with "Foncesa?(sp) it seemed edited/cut and..there wasn't even a question...
S2k driver probably affliated with VTS therefore they just incorporated that VTS is a street racing group.
Just kind of sucks for VTS and for future car enthusiast groups being labled as "racing" just because of little incidents like this , hope everything blows over soon. | They are a group of street racers... There videos are/were all over youtube months ago... they even held their meets at queensborough landing where we (Dubberz) have one of our larger meets... the police have showed up to our meets and asked about street racing on other nights...
They even mention "the strip" on their facebook page obviously implying a street because I have never seen these cars out a mission.. and at this time of year there is no drag racing in this city...
All the progress that has been made by groups like Revscene, Dubberz etc has been completely erased by idiots like these...
Its very sad... that being said this is obviously a story that will sell some papers but because these guys are stupid it makes our lives as car enthusiasts a living hell because we will be put under the microscope further because we are thought of as "street racers" |

I agree wholeheartedly yvr.
I help run the 3 club and we are always mindful of our member's behaviour and the impact it has on the community as a whole.
Then something like this happens and it takes all local clubs back a few steps.

Just kind of sucks for VTS and for future car enthusiast groups being labled as "racing" just because of little incidents like this , hope everything blows over soon. |
You also got to think that no matter what car group, that there are always some who speed (every group has speeders) although yes 240+km/h is not the typical "speeding"
I have seen CG ripping it on the highway, V240 pull drifts up at cypress
mustang (dont know the proper site for these guys) doing burnouts at 8 rinks and cypress, RS members speeding to the spring meet. (cops were out there with their radar gun), etc. there are countless examples, this one just happened to make the news causing an inflation in response and notice to this event that took place.
every group has their speeders, just sucks that the media finds one guy that was racing and associates the whole group as racers.
it could easily be said that if i say a 240 ripping it, that all of v240 are racers, or if i see a civic, all civic club members are racers, etc.
for every car. and every club, there is always going to be a group of people who do speed, and a group who obey the law.
its not a perfect world unfortunately.

I'm against street racing, but if people want to race, and possibly kill themselves on a deserted street, I don't care. It's like like somebody's gonna walk their dog in the middle of the night in buttfuck nowhere and get killed. It's not like they're racing up and down your block.
It's the whole NIMBY thing all over again. The Corporation of Delta didn't want people racing in a controlled and organized fashion in Deltaport when RS tried to do something. So what happens? People go and race in the middle of buttfuck nowhere and possibly kill themselves.
So, DP or PK Friday?

Bingo.
RS has tried over and over again to have a racing venue which is legal and for the most part safe but no one outside of the car community wants to support it. Maybe the CBC should run a story about that and give people both sides of the story but they won't.

Hi guys, this is Freddy Fonseca, the VancouverTS founder. I would just like you guys to hear my side of the story and what I have to say. First of all, I am very sorry for everything that happened. Secondly, you guys can give me all the shit you want, I’m just telling you guys my side of the story.
I was not trying to give any car enthusiasts a bad word or a bad name or a bad reputation. Yes I do run VancouverTS and we have done our fair share of activities but we live and learn when we had our last meet for the year on Saturday we ended up cruising that night to downtown, SFU, and other places. We did not in any way street race that night.
Now that night there was an individual who decided to video tape himself racing. This was not at the VancouverTS meet. The video was taken either prior to, or after our meet. We barely know the individual in the S2000. He is a new member and this was only the second meet which he had attended. Unfortunately his video has dragged VancouverTS into the trouble, even though the video did not involve us. The only reason we got dragged into this is because he had just recently became a member of our group. And Of course Since I was The VancouverTS Organizer CBC dragged me into it as well.
On December the 8th, at 11 in the morning I got a call from CBC news asking about VancouverTS and this particular individual. I was unaware of what was going to happen, I only knew that they wanted to interview me. I accepted the interview, but I realized it was a mistake because it back fired on me. The interview was just about 10 minutes long and they literally only showed me for 10 seconds. They edited everything that I said and made me look like an idiot. Now some people said that I was stoned and I just like to say that I was not.
Now what really happened was Theresa Tang asked me what we do during our meets, and I answered “We are car enthusiasts. We get together once a month or so and talk about our cars, show off our rides, help each other out with modifications and talk about how we can improve our cars.” She also asked me “Aren’t you guys worried that you might put people’s lives at risk by street racing like that and killing other innocent people?” I said “First of all, we don’t street race. If anything, we’ll go to Mission and race there, and obviously we don’t want to risk other people’s lives, but if worst comes to worst, if we find a good road we’ll block the road, and race there. so we don’t endanger anyone else’s lives, only our own.”
So obviously the interview was edited, and my words were taken out of context. They don’t even show the question that they are asking me, and they only use the parts of my answer that makes our group look bad. For everyone that has been impacted by this, I do apologize on his behalf and on my behalf as well as “ VancouverTS “. I hope you all will understand my side of the story and where I’m coming from. Thanks for hearing me out.
Freddy Fonseca ( VancouverTS Founder)

By the way i just read some other comments from the CBC web site that should be considered as well ..

The government would never allow the police to close a public road for these street racers to use.
For one thing cars that race at Mission have to have a lot of safety upgrades to handle the extra speed they go, which I doubt these street race cars have.
Also you just know that if they allowed street racing it would only be a matter of time until one of these cars crash and kills the driver, the family would sue the government/police for allowing this to happen.2People

at 3:20 AM ETI don't believe anyone is claiming more facilities will cure "All" street racing. But I do believe it would have a significant positive impact, more so than typical punitive measures. It would also immerse people in positive peer groups with the type of mentorship drivers young and old can benefit from. I'm glad to hear you seem to agree there.
I'm sure some people however, do it simply because it is illegal and dangerous with no actual interest in legitimate motorsport. (and nobody wants an otherwise enjoyable day at a track or slalom ruined by a "yahoo" driving irresponsibly/dangerously either).
But to dissallow sporty vehicles and modifications thereto would negatively and unfairly impact the large groups of enthusiasts that do use them responsibly. Worse still, it would push the modification industry underground with likely disastrous effect (see the "success" of prohibition in the USA for an example).
It's akin to sinking an entire ship to eliminate just 3 of it's passengers.2People

I totally agree with most of your comments. One of the only things I miss living in Vancouver as opposed to the island is the stock car races on Saturday night.
Sadly the local tracks here were all shut down and the land converted to more sub divisions, and although Mission was supposed to include an oval track I don't think it was ever built.
But I don't agree that the people who are street racing would go to the track, there is a whole difference between point to point racing through a metro area, and a quarter mile drag race. And the street legal production cars would not be viable on a banked oval.
I totally support the construction of a track, it could be used for driver training during the week, races on the weekend. But in the mean time I stand by my comments vis a vis the sale "performance" vehicles and the aftermarket equipment to boost their horsepower.
Olyar15 wrote:Posted 2008/12/09

It is easy for all these people to say "if you want to race, take it to a track" but there are no tracks, then that isn't really an option, is it? There is a total of one track (Mission Raceway) in the general vicinity of the Lower Mainland, and that isn't open to the public most of the time (as well as being pretty far away). There used to be another race course (Westwood Raceway) that was torn down and the land used to build condos.
So, while I don't condone street racing, I do understand that it is pretty frustrating to want to race but no place to do it. Why don't the police have events where THEY shut down certain streets, and allow people to race? That way they can monitor the situation. Or better yet, build more race tracks.
Seanjonesjones wrote:Posted 2008/12/09

A place for everything and everything in it's place. Give guys like this a place for this kind of thing and it will be put there. All the deterrence measures people propose are just going to spread illegal street racing around. Police crack down in Richmond so it moves to Surrey or PoCo.
Local auto-x events in Pitt Meadows got shut down this year due to “a number of complaints regarding noise from these events”. The events always made the same amount of noise, but city council cared because there was an election coming up. The events are held on/near the Pitt Meadows airport. Did the airport close because airplanes are loud?
Mission raceway street legal Friday nights run about 20 times over the summer weather permitting. More places/events like this would give more ‘street racers’ an opportunity to help take this off the street.
It looks like Vancouver TS has tried to do the next best thing and block off an empty road at night for organized, but still illegal, street racing. Why not give these people an empty patch of tarmac, a parking lot or something and see what they can do with it on a Friday or Saturday night. The next invitation Freddy Fonseca puts out might bring racers off the streets instead of putting them there.

Yes, racing is a crap idea (other than on a track), and yes, Mr Fonseca is being somewhat prudent by blocking roads.
But it should be pointed out that blocking roads is illegal in its own right...
If you want to race, take it to the track.
