head unit recommendation

i have had a nakamichi cd-35z since '01 and really like the deck and how it matches my interior, but i recently bought a zune and would like to be able to run it directly through the car stereo. i've tried the fm-transmitter route and it worked but aux-in is just so much better. i know nak makes some current units with aux-in but they are quite expensive and finding a retailer is impossible where i live.

any other units that would be comparable? 4v pre-outs are preferred too...

Cman333 12-09-2008 10:54 AM

Where abouts do you live? Nak's are amazing sounding stereos. Can't really compare them to most of the stuff out there nowadays.

Maybe look into the Kenwood Excelon, Pioneer Premier line. I'd say Alpine, but all their decks are 2V and under unless you add a seperate module.

Something decent would probably hit the $200 range.

I have a Nak 45z that I use for the garage system. Love it to death. Doesn't the 35z have an Aux In at the back? All you need is an adapter to take it from RCA to mini connector.

Edit: Nevermind........ just found out the 35z doesn't have the aux in.

Alpine CDA-9885/6/7 are 4v pre-outs
all have high-pass filter BUT only 9887 has both high/low-pass filter

im also looking for a head unit with aux and possibly a usb?

SizzleChest 12-09-2008 06:22 PM

i really like nakamichi for its simplistic looks. i think i've browsed through all the mainstream brands and there isn't anything that looks too appealing. my truck is a '92 and the interior has no razzle-dazzle.

Well, I do have a Nakamichi TD1200 Mk II that's not being used. I guess I can say good bye to the CD 45z, but I'll miss the CD Changer control, remote control, aux in, 4 volt/4 channel, sub out, etc, etc. BTW, the deck is in pristine condition. Have box, manual, DIN cage, etc. I don't need another deck, though. Then again, I could use the money..........PM me with offer.

We have the Premier DEH-P400UB for $220.00.

orgasm_donor 12-09-2008 09:53 PM

Nakamichi went under a few years ago now so support and repairs could be impossible to get. Can't beat Pioneer Premier's 2 year warranty!

U sent me a pm? Whoa. Sorry I mightve missed it. I don't see it in my message box.

But no I don't. I'm not sure who carries it anymore since the Distributor in Canada no longer carries it.

They'll always be pricey, I highly doubt anyone in Kamloops would carry it. It's hard enough to find in Vancouver. Let alone Kamloops. :p

Online perhaps?

seems that the only difference between the premier 400UB and pioneer 4000UB is the extra one year warranty with the 400 and they expect you to pay an extra $50 for it?

Plus you get the Ipod cable in the 400 for free. Thats a $40 extra at Futureshop.

enlighten me on the ipod cable. connecting your ipod to your headunit allows you to control your ipod from the headunit itself, but that seems to me like a negative. if you are using an aux-in, you can put the ipod in your lap or up on the dash or wherever is most convenient for you and control it from there. with the other connection, you have to look down to make your adjustments which potentially could be dangerous. i think the cable charges the ipod, correct? that is convenient, but a fully charged battery should last well over 12 hours so is it that necessary?

The advantages to the iPod direct cable is that you'll get a cleaner signal to your deck. The analog signal still works from the iPod to the rear of the Pioneer deck, so you have a choice.
iPod's have a tendency to kill their batteries after a short time of using them on a permanent basis, that's why they sell the battery kits. This option relieves you of that and gives you digital input; full iPod control; you can hide the iPod in your glove box so that thieves can't see it or the wire and it's easier to control it through the remote control that comes with the deck so you can keep your eyes on the road.
The bottom line is $170 for the 4000 or $220 for the 400. You can always upgrade the iPod system for $30 more through us.

One of the many reasons why Ipod is more popular than ever - whether you like it or not. :)

Does the Zune have a USB output? If so, then you can plug it directly into the rear of the Pioneer.

i'm not so sure how accurate that statement is. the reason that i jumped ship is because i went through two ipods in just over 3 years that were babied from day one and they both just all of a sudden died on me. i'm hoping to get more reliable performance from microsoft. that, and i was able to score the 120gb from walmart before any other retailer had it in stock for $200 while they had the 80gb right beside it for $250.

I just said that it was one more reason people are choosing Ipods. I won't list the reasons why people are avoiding them - thats a whole other thread. I personally have 3 Ipods and they all work great! The searching and control feature from the deck is very accurate and safe to use even while driving.

opinions please...

pioneer deh-p5000ub
or
pioneer deh-p400ub

the 5000 is about $25-$30 more than the 400 and only has a 1 year warranty rather than 2 years with the 400. aside from that, i think the only difference between the two is appearance.
