I've tried comparing the OB sound card vs a M-audio and Audiogy sound card and you really won't see any difference in terms of sound playback quality...it just gives you more interface and features and that's it.

I think a proper sound card is required for proper DTS/AC3 surround sound. From my experience, I wasn't able to get my amp to output DTS or AC3 with the onboard coax SPDIF. I was limited to Pro-Logic. I installed a card that specifically supported DTS/AC3, and that worked great. My amp is able to detect the encoding, and switch to the appropriate mode.

i think 'both' is the way to go
the ps3 upscales quite nicely (and gaming) but part of the formats of my daily videos include rmvb which a lot of asian parents cannot live without
my mom complained about the streaming sites 'cause she was too used to the newer 720p rmvbs ppl are sharing
