Question about SMSing from the states.

So basically I'm going to the states tomorrow for a week, just wondering if there is a "roaming fee" for text messages. I'm on Fido and once I get to the states I change to cingular, does it cost me extra money to SMS people in Canada?

thedon 12-31-2008 01:58 AM

yup, its 60 cents per text message you send

fuhkyu 12-31-2008 02:52 AM

holy fuck 60 cents an sms?!

thanks for the reply haha

TekDragon 12-31-2008 09:09 AM

You can get a package from Fido that should be cheaper. Either that, or unlock the phone and buy a small prepaid card down there.

BoneThug 12-31-2008 05:03 PM

is that serious?

murd0c 12-31-2008 05:22 PM

and turn your phone off or you will get charged with just roaming fees I was in texas for a week and came home to a $500 phone bill

muteki 12-31-2008 10:18 PM

^ Well you don't have to turn your phone off. Just don't reply to text messages or pick up calls. Haha.

shenmecar 01-01-2009 12:46 AM

does it cost money to receive text in the states?

if you are on a plan that receiving text is normally free in Vancouver

kayceeee 01-01-2009 12:47 AM

And turn off your voicemail

I thought you only get charged roaming if you use your phone? People still sent me text messages and phone calls but I never replied text messages or picked up phone calls, hence I didn't pay anything extra on my monthly bill with Rogers.

murd0c 01-01-2009 02:11 PM

nope I was with fido and I was charged while it was on casue it was roaming picking up from different cell phone towers so I could get a signal. Thats what they told me and there was nothing they could do about it they said

kayceeee 01-01-2009 03:10 PM

having a signal wont incur roaming charges tho...receiving text is always free from a mobile phone, whereever u are..sending is a different issue

racerman88 01-01-2009 04:21 PM

I was in Florida, Jamica and Mexico and was never charged roaming with Rogers, b/c I never picked up. Should only get charged once you initiate a phone call, when you hit send.

fuhkyu 01-01-2009 06:11 PM

I've never heard of being charged for picking up signals either... hopefully i wont get charged for roaming if i do im gonna shit bricks.

You should be able to see on your bill what the charges are for. It's not from having your phone on. Unless you have some application that's pulling data from your data plan, or answered a call or sent an SMS, you don't get charged. Whoever told you that from Fido is full of it.

kayceeee 01-01-2009 08:20 PM

also make sure u dont foward ur calls to vm, cuz if u dont pick up and ur vm does, its still roaming ;)

muteki 01-02-2009 01:05 AM

You shouldn't be charged for roaming if you don't pick up the calls or reply to sms.
I always bring my phone on vacation. -_-;;

I'm pretty sure that's correct but correct me if I'm wrong..i don't use voicemail but I believe that's how it works, ur voicemail 'picksup' the phone call..thus roaming charges

I got a similar question:

I'm staying up at Whistler for 4 nights.. Will there be any roaming charges and will they charge me for using data up there? I'm with Rogers using a Blackberry w/ data + my5 plan.

Thanks.

way2quik 01-03-2009 07:05 PM

I thought Rogers coverage covers Whistler hence no roaming charges.
It's Fido that has to pay extra for the extended network coverage.
