Bottle Jack Vs Floor Jack
 

Someone was telling me that bottle jacks were more dangerous then floor jacks. What are the reasons?

Stability on the base, and a smaller jacking point on the hydraulic head itself.

just always use jackstands after the vehicle is jacked up.

Picture a steel tube pointing strait up from the ground. If you hook a piece of rope to its highest point and pull over, it'll fall. A floor jack, the wheels are spaces minimumly ar around 12inches or so... This gives it more than one point of stability making it much harder to tip over, but it still happens on soft ground where... a bottle jack may do a better job.

Yep they are not as stable as floor jacks. Also bottle jacks tend to be taller and don't really get under alot of small cars.

Ya unless you have an SUV I don't see how a bottle jack can work on most cars. Their starting height must be at least 7 inches. It's hard enough jacking up my GTR with a standard floor jack.

I wanna buy a proper garage quality floor jack that is super low and takes like 4 pumps to get up. What's the best place to get one? KMS?

i realized that when i tried to rotate my tires on my pathfinder

takes 17" to even raise the tires off the ground, my jack stops at 16"

someone i know uses cut up 2x12 lumber sections as a base for the jacks to overcome this... but is that safe? :confused:

yah.. i was thinking of getting a bottle jack for a SUV and Van.... the conventional floor jack just doesn't cut it !!

i use 2 2x12 as base, and it adds up height, i have one of those medium size jacks and doesnt go that high

using wood or something hard to shove under the jack is fine when raising a car

BUT...with a floor jack , as the car rises, the jack tends to move as well on its wheels so if its on a wood and can't move, there is a good chance the car can fall off the jack

thats only a real issue if you jacking up the entire front / rear end

if its only on 1 side thats fine

floor jacks pwn bottle jacks...

I have to drive the lowrider up onto pieces of wood to fit even a low-profile jack under the frame :D

where's a good place to get a quality floor jack? any brands as well?

just check them out...if it looks/feels flimsy, it probably is...if it looks/feels solid...go for it.

I got a chrome (bling blang muthafuckaz) floor jack with two chrome jackstands (as mentioned before NEVER use a jack without jackstands) for like 40 bucks from Wal Mart (it was the last one with a smashed up box...like I gave a crap.)

it's worked flawlessly for years :)
