WTF is with the new iPods?? So my wife gave her 3rd-gen Nano to the kid when he went off to university, and then got herself a new 4th-gen... and discovered that it wouldn't charge off her car charger OR wall charger, and had to get new versions of both. The car charger was actually one we found at a truck stop, labeled as being for use with a 3G iPhone. So now I've got her a speaker dock - you know, portable-radio-type thing with an iPod dock in it... and it won't charge on that either. Works fine with my older iPod Mini, but not with the new Nano. It plays, remote works, everything functions, except charging. (The thing does have a USB port for plugging in a Shuffle, and the Nano will charge off that using its regular USB cable...) Stupid Apple [/rant] |
wow thats good to know. i never knew the wall chargers wouldnt work with the new gen. i know some of the docking speakers state specifically which models it works for. |
For the new gen iPods the charging accessory has to have a certain chip in it in order for it to charge. This is just a ploy to get mass-produced chargers off the market so more money goes to the main brands. One of my friends claims that when he unlocked his new iPod, it charged on the same accessories that it didn't work on before. |
Oh, now this is something. Does this apply to the iphone 3g? I was planning on getting one next month. It would s.u.c.k. to have to buy proprietary chargers for a unit with the same connectors. Especially since Apple probably doesn't provide one in the box anymore. And I need 2. And I already have them. |
All the iPods in the current line require new accessories except for the Classic. For example, if you plug your 2G iPod Touch with a LOD cable, the speaker turns on instead. |
Yeah for a few generations I was able to use my original ipod mini wall charger to charge my devices. But when I got my iphone 3g, the wall charger would not work. But the iphone 3g wall charger worked on all my previous devices. :-\ |
The LOD cable doesn't work? Can you at least get one from Apple directly? I need to run this to a portable headphone amp. |
wow im getting an iphone 3g in a few days, good to know |
Basically they moved away from firewire support to usb only with the latest generation of ipods. So if your charger only has the firewire chip, then you can't use it with the new ipods. more info: http://www.everymac.com/systems/appl...wire-usb2.html |
good thing my iphone 2g works with my first gen mini charger :lol |
Yeah iphone 2g works with my firewire wall charger aswell, i had to give my stepmom my usb wall charger since she got the new nano for xmas and the firewire didnt work for it... WTF is up with that shit and aswell it does not work for any of the ipod speaker docks inside the house... thats pretty bullshit when you buy a $200 apple system and cant even use with the new products... nice going apple.. |

I noticed the same thing too with my 1G Touch. My wall USB charger for my Blackberry worked fine for my bro's 3rd gen Nano, but refused to charge my Touch. I went through a few different eBay/Dealextreme USB chargers before I found one that would charge my Touch reliably. I'm not sure about the chip thing being mentioned - I thought that was ONLY for video output from the iPod and not the charging mechanism. |
