UBC: has anyone appealed a grade Hey revscene, So, I'm thinking of appealing a grade (Comm 486w - those of you in commerce would know...) at UBC, though I have a few reservations (reason: feel that the mark is misrepresentative of my actual achievement). 1. What are the odds that my mark will decrease? 2. Who regrades the work? (course co-ordinator, same professor) It'd be great if anyone could share their experience - I feel totally shortchanged! |
1. Chances of mark actually going lower than the one you have is a definite possibility. It is as much as your mark going up. This all depends on your work. 2. The person who looks over the grade will be another prof of that class. Though I don't know of too many profs who actually look at papers/exams, it is mostly TAs who do that. So another TA or colleague (if not the professor since he/she never marked it). |
Many people have complained about 486W. I'm not sure if you would be successful in getting your mark increased.....that class is somewhat subjective. Hopefully I don't get screwed :( (I'm taking it this term) |
I spoke to my professor and he said it would be likely be the course co-ordinator who will mark it. There are unfortunately no T.A.s for this course (unfortunately). So yeah, I'll have to speak to him again...this course has a participation component to the mark (I scored poorly on that part), and if that portion isn't going to be re-assessed then there's no point in me appealing. The participation component is not based on attendance but rather on the submission of assignments - ALL of which I did. Unfortunately, I cannot prove this because all of my marked assignments/work have been lost. Verdict: Will likely appeal if the participation component will be re-evaluated as well. Warning to others about comm 486w: worst course ever!!! Incredibly disorganized - my professor had lost one of my assignments - possibly one of the reasons why my grade is so misrepresentative. Professors are also not very helpful - I got the "you're just trying to boost your already decent mark" response. |
p.s. good luck Mentar. As long as you're decent in English it should be no problem, though. |
