Con's of having a hole in your muffler?

Ok so my muffler has a hole in it for probably a year now, loud as hell, i feel like i'm driving a ricer sometimes lol. I've gotten air care done on it today and I passed w/out problems, no dilution that the machines noticed.

What i Want to know is.. do i really need to get it fixed/change it?

I know the cons are that my car will be loud as hell and rust hole can get bigger, and the exhaust will probably fall off... but... is that it?

I think he means there's a RUST hole in his muffler

Could potentially affect mileage, but the main con is that it may make it difficult for Aircare to test your car.

The "sniffer" requires a certain volume of exhaust flow to operate, and it there is another hole in your exhaust system, oftentimes the aircare idle test will result in a "sample dilution". You could always tape the hole closed just before you go to aircare I guess.... but basically it can make things a pain.

I just got air care done today and I passed. I guess what I'm trying to ask is do i really need to fix my muffler?

If you can live with the noise, you don't need to fix it.

shenmecar 01-21-2009 02:20 PM

its annoying for ppl walking down the street.

sonick 01-21-2009 02:36 PM

If the noise really bothers you, you could try getting some metal epoxy and patching the hole with it depending how big the hole is.

jlenko 01-21-2009 03:27 PM

The police can pull you over and give you a VI notice.... then you'll have to get it fixed and anything else that's 'deficient' on your car.

thanks guys! planning on gettting anew car soon, i don't think the '95 civic needs a new muffler.. i can live with it

rainbow_star 01-23-2009 01:04 PM

If it's a 95 civic, most likely you can find a used stock muffler for like $20 in the forum. Just ask around man.

Kamui712 01-24-2009 08:19 AM

What street do you live on?

Leopold Stotch 01-24-2009 03:48 PM

^ LOL

don't fix it. unless you like doing mechanical things, in that case make a day of it and put a stock one on it.

tonyvu 01-24-2009 04:27 PM

loose performance...

Kamui712 01-24-2009 05:10 PM

lol i guess it would loose a little, but even at the best performance stock i'm getting like no power haha i've found some fun outt of a loud muffler... when ppl are jay walking slowly and holding up traffic i can rev my engine and watch them jump up and run! :D
