Obsessive Parenting - Social Network Sites

I'm watching Dr. Phil right now and they're discussing about social networking websites like Facebook and MySpace.

There's this girl Ashley and apparently her mom checks her Facebook account and responds to Ashley's friends more often than her daughter does. Ashley's friends get added by her mom and it's gotten so bad, that they're calling the mom a stalker.

Now they're talking about getting physical about this situation. Apparently Ashley -in some way or another- gave her mom a black eye. Then the mom took a picture of it and sent it to a bunch of Ashley's friends.

Dr. Phil: And you sent it to all her friends?
Mom: ... Not all her friends, only some of them :)
*Dr. Phil rolls his eyes and falls back into his seat*

Later there's going to be a woman who seriously believes that she was in a deep intimate relationship with Matthew Perry.

If you were in these type of situations (not saying anyone here is dumb enough to fall for situation #2) what would you do?

Inform the friends that mom is really insane and not to talk to her/ignore her. If that doesn't work, you really only have two other options... kill yourself or kill mom

Hondaracer 01-21-2009 03:42 PM

i dont associate myself with friends who have parents that dumb..

not to mention post thousands of pics, videos, and info about myself doing drugs, drinking, partying etc. all over facebook

Well, after a lot of discussion on this topic in one of my courses...

I've realized that Facebook/Myspace...these social networking sites...can be both advantageous as well as...not so very advantageous...

Right or wrong, if you're lookin' to land that job, you should really take off all your image-disrupting photos off your FB...

As for parents getting involved? That mother really crossed the line...I watched a bit of this episode of Dr.Phil earlier this afternoon as well...

Hope they patch things up!

Dr. Phil is not a practicing doctor, has a failed marriage, and is a self righteous prick. His advice should never be heeded, and I wait with baited breath for the day his show gets cancelled.

moms shouldnt interfere with their kid's social life.

The_AK 01-21-2009 10:04 PM

putting a password on your facebook account would be a good start

miss_crayon 01-21-2009 10:53 PM

i'm all for people interacting with each other on the net, but i refuse to add any relative that is an aunt, uncle, mom, dad etc to my fb. i don't mind them looking out for me, but i dont think they need to know what i say/do every second of the day.

1. wait for mom to fall asleep
2. go to kitchen to grab big knife
3. invade your mom's room
4. ???
5. Profit!!!

I'm down with adding the mother of my friends on Facebook only if they're hot.
