D400?

Thinking of getting my first dslr and looking at the d300 but heard that it's going to be discontinued soon. Any advice on the whether i should wait for the new one?

If you can afford a brand new D400, probably $1899 when it comes out, why not step up to a D700 instead, probably be mid 2000's by the time the D400 comes out. But I agree, a bit excessive for your first DSLR.

I would go for the D90 its got a lot of the same features

no one knows when the D400 will come out and seriously, it won't take better pictures than you can with the D300. The D300 is probably the best semi-pro camera on the market at the moment and the only thing they can add to it will probably be a video mode, higher mega pixel count, and some minor changes/improvements here and there.

if you need one now, get the D300 and don't wait. but if you want the latest and greatest then you'll likely have to wait til late this year, or whenever the D400 or whatever it'll be called comes out.

actually, if this is your first dSLR ever, I would probably just get a D90 or a Canon 40D (best bang for the buck right now for a semi-pro cam) and see how you like it before spending too much on the more expensive stuff.

WHy not?

First DSLR I bought was a D700. Been looking at a DSLR for several years and D700 finally did what I wanted for a good price. I already had lots of Nikkor lenses from shooting film for years, so I sat back until Nikon made a DSLR I wanted.

But at least you have SLR experience and know how to use the camera. My friend wanted to buy a D300 but she has no clue how to set anything herself. I told her there's no AUTO mode or any preset modes and she's like WTF? She ended up buying a D90 instead. At least now I've convinced her to learn how to use P mode.
