I still personally think a thumbs-up-thumbs-down system (like YouTube) would work quite well.
It leaves a lot less room for abuse than rep and thank-you systems.

It's still there... but you can only thank five times a day now.

I think it should actually be even fewer... like two. The more "rare" it is, the more meaning they'll actually have...
