Armed security guards on BC Ferries?

Has anyone been listening to the news?

A toronto institute is recommending armed security guards be put on BC Ferries to prevent terror attacks.

Is this really necessary? How is one guy with a gun really going to make a difference?

Waste of time. If someone wants to hijack the ferry, they'll load up 10 buses full of guys armed to the teeth and roll right on. Its not like they do security checks at the terminal for weapons and such. If you only have one guy, he better be Chuck Norris!

Ya know I never really thought about that, I've only been on the ferry a couple times in the last 10 years, but they never checked my car when I drove on. Could you imagine the damage that could be caused and Chaos if say 3 terrorists boarded 3 different ferry's with car bombs. Then either exploded them at sea or worse at one of the terminals. If Vancouver lost 3 ferry's, countless lives and a couple terminals at once. It would ruin Vancouver for at least a few months. Then they would start inspecting cars before they got on the ferry, which would take 10x longer for each ferry to be loaded, traffic would grind to a halt, BC Economy would take a deeper dump than it already has. The Olympic committee might even have to take a 2nd look at BC Security if BC cant protect its own infrastructure how would it protect the Olympic games? They might choose to walk away from Vancouver.

So one guard with a gun, na, I say if you want to do it right, 10 guards with guns and a couple bomb sniffing dogs, maybe one of those bomb xray machines at each route.

Sure gives ya something to think about eh.

OH NOES! THEY'RE GOING TO HIJACK THE FERRY AND DRIVE IT INTO....

wait... that's the stupidest idea ever. Totally unnecessary. The only thing armed security forces are going to do is make people dwell on fear, which we don't need any more of.

Although, someone would probably take the gun away from a security officer to shoot one of those god damned horrible people that sit in the massage chairs for more then an hour without putting money in it... so there could be benefits.

The terrorists are winning. They are putting so much fear into North Americans that we are becoming afraid of EVERYTHING.

They would do better to protect the ferries if they installed those car scanners like they have at the border rather than have armed security on board.

Those would be a nice touch. If they're only going to have a couple units on board, make them plain clothes units, more like sky marshalls to at least give them a chance of being effective.

I bet you there is already a hoard of highly trained ninja's on every ferry, but because they're so good we've never noticed them.

And never will.

WHO TOLD YOU!!!????!?!

I mean, um, no there isn't.

What a retarded idea. What are they going to do with it? drive it into a marina? sink it? whatever they would do has already been done by bc ferries.

put the armed guards on oil tankers.

so true!

i suppose if terrorist attacks were taking place in Canada this might be a issue to deal with, but yeah.. there hasn't been much in the way of terrorism since 911 in the USA or Canada.

i hope all of these security measures give BC Ferries yet more excuses to raise prices, too.

I think it's a silly idea for terrorists but maybe not a bad idea since there are so many people on the ferries now just for security. Our police are only here to protect 99% of us from the other 1% and sometimes that 1% take the ferry.

and that would give oil companies another "reason" to raise our gas prices.:(

Not a bad idea to have a few sky marshal type officers on there. There's a lot of things that can happen that aren't terrorist related and police response to the middle of the ocean has to be pretty slow lol.

The only scary thing happening with BC ferries is the placement of the children's play area, and it's proximity to quiet areas of the ship.

/surly.

stevo911_ 01-30-2009 11:36 AM

^the new ferries are way better for that, they're more compartmentalised

Great68 01-30-2009 12:02 PM

Those new ferries are like all staircase.
