What would you need 100mb/s for though?

Hondaracer 02-07-2009 11:18 AM

my speeds have really picked up over the last few days

TOPEC 02-07-2009 12:41 PM

i think either after doing upgrades, shaw a) is compensating everyone for the slow speeds during the upgrade or b) they havnt set the limit on people's speed yet.

SmokeyTheBandit 02-07-2009 12:51 PM

shaw now includes free powerboost with any customer that has shaw high speed or higher.
shaw high speed goes from 5mbits to 7.5mbits

extreme from 10 to 15mbits

all with free powerboosts.

if you are having issues with speeds, its more then likely outside of shaws network that is causing the issue.

these are my speeds :)

I was getting 3-5 Mbps for the longest time on my $35 High-Speed Shaw internet connection. This past week everything came to a crawl and I was only getting 1-2 Mbps. I don't remember the ping time but web pages would barely load and took forever to respond.

As of yesterday every seems back to normal until I did a speed test and found this.... Woohoo!!! Its been between 13-24 Mbps and I love it!

fuck its kinda stupid if everyone is experiancing the same thing that they dont tell people wtf is going on..

Underdawg 02-07-2009 09:38 PM

Note that if you have Power Boost on your account the speed test might be a bit inaccurate because theres no cap when testing the download bandwidth - its like a constant flowing water so thats why the number is large.

If you are experiencing slow speed, try the following first before you contact Shaw:

-bypass your router and connect straight to modem (bypass hardware firewall and other hardware influences)

-reboot computer in safemode WITH NETWORKING (by tapping F8 when restarting) to bypass all software firewalls/trojans

-run various speed test and log the stats, running speed test in normal windows mode can be very inaccurate sometimes

-If you dont have any sort of protections on computer, it is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you try a free online scan on the various anti-virus websites to make sure you arent infected. Also download the free trojan scanner http://www.malwarebytes.org
It can detect lots of hidden spywares/trojans that regular virus scanner cant detect. I had a slow speed customer calling me before and he end up finding 40+ infected things after a full scan.

-What kind of modem are you using? skinny little black Motorola is the newer/stable one. If you have the old blue Terayon, bring it to shaw retail and ask for a free swap!

-Call Shaw's 24 hour support and ask them to check if there is any maintenance/outage in the area.

-If all looks good but you are still getting slow speed, ask them to check for any modem "packet loss" (abnormal bandwidth loss when transferring data) or area "saturation" (area bandwidth has reached its limit)

Hondaracer 02-07-2009 10:04 PM

how do u know wether you have the speedboost enabled? im asuming i do considering my speed test above being on extreme-I which is suppose to be 10mb?

Underdawg 02-07-2009 10:12 PM

all extreme-I comes pre-loaded with free Power-Boost, for regular high speed it is $2.95 to add.
