Help me with my internet

k i've posted before but it seems like it's gotten really bad as of late and i cant figure it out, i have Shaw Extreme-i internet with a brand new Dlink DIR-655 router, normally there are 2-3 computers on it hardwired, and then usually a PS3 or 360, occasionally wireless Wii

this used to happen with my old WRT-300N router as well, but the wireless signal was very weak and i think the router was coming to it's end anyways

but even with this stupid brand new router occasionally while surfing the web i notice that pages slow down and stop loading all together, the net then kinda drops out, if i give it a minute or 2 it will pop back up, the pages i was waiting for will load, and things like MSN, utorrent, etc. will all pop back up and open since they just reconnected

also today when i was screwing around with my PC and i reset it, the internet took so long to connect that the little symbol for network comes up and it's "aquiring network address" it took like a minute for my PC to finally connect

a speedtest i just did:

http://www.speedtest.net/result/402485400.png

this is what the router looks like at idle when the computer has just started up:

today while i was trying to run a online virus scan it only worked once out of 5 times i tried it, in all those other times it just sat idle at one spot not scanning or even able to move to the next screen this was the log during that time:

and finally i just noticed my wireless kicked out and came back as i was tryping this, so this is the log from that, i'm not sure if the wired connections dropped at thie time as well or not

any ideas?? is there any way to check the modems log? I have a Motorolla SB5101

http://images.pcworld.com/news/graph...la-S5101_b.jpg

i told shaw i thought my modem might have been the culprit and see if they would give me a new one if they now carry a newer model, but they just kept telling me the only way i would receive a new one is if a technician came in and did a full diagnosis

any ideas?

what antivirus/firewall s/w are u running?
have you tried plugging in one of your computers directly and do a speed test, what speeds do you get?
do you have your utorrent running all the time?

Hondaracer 02-01-2009 07:14 PM

utorrent or any other DL programs are never running during these events

i use nothing but windows firewall and the built in security of the router, i dont use anything else

and also no anti-virus, but all the computers on the network are experiancing very similar symptoms including the wired PS3 and 360

MikeyStyle 02-01-2009 07:21 PM

have you tried doing what dragonchi suggested as in connecting one computer to the modem and doing a speed test?

StylinRed 02-01-2009 07:35 PM

Maple ridge is having a messed up connection with Shaw too

been on the phone with them for about an hour before the guy said " looks like we got lots of reports of this issue, we'll look into it "

im getting 400ms 525download and 400 upload

my neighbours wifi is getting the same (just went on to test it)

Hondaracer 02-01-2009 07:44 PM

^ im going to try the straight modem test right now

are you experiance similar slowdowns StylinRed or how long has yours been like that?

Hondaracer 02-01-2009 08:04 PM

speedtest straight modem with only my 1 PC on it:

your computer is aquiring an IP from the router. the router would already have an IP from shaw before, durring, and after the PC reset and would have nothing to do with the router giving the comptuer an IP. this sounds like router.

I'm pretty sure the router would give the PC an IP even with no internet connection. (as it's acting as a DCHP server using local IPs)

LOL I just did speed test and got 336 / 58

maybe it's time to get rid of this terayon modem

have a technician take a look at your internet speeds

You sure a Torrent isn't running? I checked a few of the IP's and they're coming from all around the world (China, Bulgaria, US are the first 3) on high numbered ports.

I think someone earlier mentioned it, but if you connect just one computer directly to the modem, do you still have the slow performance? Ideally, you'll want it to be a PC that you know is relatively clean (i.e. no possibility of trojans, viruses, torrents, etc running on it) and see if the performance is still slow.

If you're curious as to who those IP's belong to, try this.

One more thing - do you see in your PC's event viewer a message like this:
EventID 4226: TCP/IP has reached the security limit imposed on the number of concurrent TCP connect attempts

If so, it may be a Vista or post XP SP2 problem where they limited the number of simultaneous connections to 10.

DragonChi 02-01-2009 11:17 PM

what about unplugging the router from the power cord.
plug it back in, maybe it'll get a new IP from shaw and connect it straight to the computer again.

If you still get slow speeds, i would call shaw for a technician to go over.

Hondaracer 02-02-2009 08:20 AM

Torrents are never running either on any of those tests and the non-router test posted above was on my wired PC which is probably the cleanest one in the house and is also the host or w/e with all the router stiff on it

I've unpluged and reset the router and modem numerous times and it always acts the same after a few hours of that new ip

DragonChi 02-02-2009 09:45 AM

do you get full speed after getting the new IP?
if your not getting internet through your router and it happens after a couple hours, call shaw to send over a technician.

Hondaracer 02-02-2009 10:21 AM

right after the router and modem are reset it usually seems slower then ever then it seems to work itself back into the normal slow connection, under a month ago I was getting 20,000kbs or more on the sperdtest through the router

I'm gonna call shaw tonight and set somthing up

Hondaracer 02-02-2009 06:44 PM

does anyone know the address to access your modems log?

MikeyStyle 02-02-2009 06:48 PM

you can some pages at 192.168.100.1 i believe, but you'll have to do it after a power cycle of the modem and without the coaxial cable plugged in
