Are these good speakers? Is this a good deal?
 

A guy locally is selling a pair of JBL GTO 962 6x9s in boxes as well as a pair of 8" MTX RoadThunder subs in small truck boxes (perfect for me, they'd be going into a standard cab S10) for $100 for the whole lot...is that a good deal? (I'm planning on tossing the 6x9s in my Suzuki Sidekick and the subs in my truck).

I've had 10s before and I was pleased with them...will a pair of 8s be much louder/deeper than the 6x9s I have in my truck?

Are these good quality speakers/subs?

The speakers/subs are not hooked up...is there any way to test them? In my Zuk I have some wires for the rear speakers that I can use to test the 6x9s...it's just wires straight from the deck...would I be able to use that for a couple seconds just to make sure the subs work?

Word of warning, those MTX subs I'm assuming are the old road thunders (black face).

I used to sell those way back in the days and they are very disappointing. The subs barely handle any power, they bottom out very easily once you get the volume up midway.

They would provide more bass than 6x9's for sure, but they don't perform well for subwoofers. They used to retail for $199, then when they didn't sell the price dropped to $99 for the two boxes and subs. I remember they didn't sell til they cleared them out for $49. I can't even remember how many of those subs got returned back in those days. People would buy them because of the price, then return them to upgrade.

No you can't properly test them without an amp. Deck power isn't enough to drive the subs, nor is it the right frequency range. You need an amp with at least 50RMS and a low pass filter to not kill your subs.

Also, I think Keiths "yes" reply was to answer your "will the two 8" subs be louder than my 6x9" question. Not the "are these good quality" question.

For $100.00 you could do worst. You could buy all of that stuff and then blow the subs (but you now have boxes that fit your Suzuki). You could always upgrade from there.

Thanks for the advice. I'll see if he maybe wants to just part with the 6x9s. My truck won't be on the road for another 2 months, so I'm not in a huge hurry to buy subs.

Depends on the shallow mount

But in most cases yes. I've done many of those shallow subs successfully in many different trucks. Won't be earth shattering, but definately acceptable. Enclosure design is very important though.

thanks...the guy doesn't want to separate the speakers and all he can tell me is that he just hooked it up in his buddy's '08 5.0 Mustang (AFAIK, there were no '08 5.0 Stangs), and they work well...uhh...no thanks.

Will most factory enclosures do well? Are Bassworx boxes good? I think I'll look for a single 10/12.

Yeah those boxes are decent. If you're handy, you can always make your own out of MDF. That was you can make to the exact size you need for your truck. Pre-Fab boxes you have to try and work around, which isn't always the easiest thing.
