B.C. prepares to introduce high-tech driver's licences

VANCOUVER — High-tech driver's licences will soon make their debut in British Columbia to help prevent identity theft and fraud.

Solicitor General John van Dongen said Friday the new licences will be hard to forge or get under false names.

“Driver's licences are widely trusted as ID and, when tampered with, can cost people, business and financial institutions millions of dollars each year,” Mr. van Dongen said in a statement.

Security features will include facial recognition technology that analyzes facial characteristics that do not change, such as the size and location of cheekbones and the distance between the eyes.

The technology does not include collecting any new information about drivers, Mr. van Dongen said.

“The use of facial recognition technology has been reviewed for privacy implications and has been found to meet the requirements of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.”

The high-tech licences will include counterfeit-prevention devices like holographic overlays and laser-engraving or raising of features like the cardholder's image and signature.

The cards will also provide additional information for cardholders under age 19, so it will be easier for police and retailers of alcohol, tobacco and lottery products to quickly verify a person's age.

Sergeant Rick Koop of the RCMP's B.C. Commercial Crime Section said the secure cards will be difficult for criminals to counterfeit.

B.C. is joining other provinces and 30 U.S. jurisdictions by introducing the licences, which will be issued starting March 2 to drivers who apply for a new, renewed or replacement card.

A year ago, B.C. began issuing what it calls one of the world's most high-tech birth certificates, with more than 20 security features.

I like the additional info added to those that are under 19.

If Ontario is used as an example for BC.. getting the high tech card for cross border will be just as hard as the Nexus.. ie face to face interviews and security check.

I was suppose to get a high tech card but the day I went in, the ICBC machines were down and it was the last day :(

I think they should have vertical license for those who are under 19 and the normal horizontal one for those 19 and above. Similar to what they do in Washington.

I think if a retailer can't do enough basic math to figure out if someone is 19 or not, our education system has failed them drastically.

The security measures seem like a good idea. I wonder how much more the cards will cost us at renewal time though?

jinx_fx 02-06-2009 02:36 PM

they mentioned on the news that the renewal costs will still be the same.

68style 02-08-2009 07:18 AM

I've even written letters and emails to people at the DMV and other parts of government... why in the name of all that makes sense can our licenses not show the original date of issue on them so people in foreign countries (especially ones renting out cars!!!) can tell how long you have been driving for!!! Every fuckin time I try to rent a car in another country I go through the same damn routine with them thinking I've only been driving for a year or something because it says "Issued on: " whenever you most recently renewed... so stupid!!!!
