Disconnecting Router
 

After a quite frustrating period of time to get my new D Link router to work, I finally got it to suppourt internet on my comp, and my laptop. I can do a google search fine, but when i click a link, the connection drops (internet LED goes black). I have quite limited knowledge of technical computer stuff and looking through other peoples router posts and googling this question has not solved the solution. I have adsl which requires me to manually set my tcp/ip settings, I dont know if that is a factor in anything, but I had to reset some of them to router IP's to get the internet to work, but after changing them back to my normal settings, the router still showed internet connection but I couldnt connect to anything. I have a feeling the solution isnt that hard, I just cant figure it out, any help is appreciated.

What you have to do is take the settings that were on your computer and put them in the router. That would be IP address, Subnet Mask, Gateway, and DNS('s). Then on your computer, you should be able to set your IP address to automatically detect (DHCP), and your router will give your computer an address.

You can verify your IP address by going to Start > Run. Type CMD in the box and click OK. A black window will open. Type IPCONFIG, and press enter. Your IP address should be something like 192.168.1.x.

Little bit confused as to what you're saying here.

Presto- yah I set the ip, subnet etc on the router, but i didnt set my computer to automatically detect, ill try that thanks.

InvisibleSoul - lol i dont know much about internet not sure if other connections require you to manually set them so i just mentioned it. what i mean is, on my computer i changed the IP and one of the DNS and i think gateway to the routers ip, to get the internet to somewhat work. When i changed them back to my ISP ip dns gateway but still had the router connected, shouldnt the internet LED no longer be on? (because it wasnt on prior to setting them to the routers ip)

I'm not sure why you need to manually set anything, on either your router or your computer... you should be able to leave it as DHCP for both and everything should work just fine...

Unless you get a static IP from your ISP... but that wouldn't be for the home user.

I've found a DSL connection to be more troublesome than cable. Is cable an option for you?
