The 4.6 liter Tau V8 offered in the Hyundai Genesis Sedan normally cranks out 380 HP, but this prototype engine gets a screw-type roots supercharger with a novel clutched pulley, a water-to-air intercooler, and cylinder deactivation. This results in 460 HP and 435 lb-ft of torque while returning 8% better fuel economy than the N/A V8.

The flow path is rather unique as well, with the supercharger intake at the rear, charged air going down into the intercooler and then back up into a split plenum which feeds the throttle at the rear of the engine. There aren't any formal plans to introduce this engine to any product at the moment, but it exists, which means there's a gleam in someone's eye. Perhaps sooner or later we'll get to run the Hyundai Genesis R-Spec Sedan versus the Chrysler 300C SRT8.

Very nice engine. Are they actually gonna put that thing into production?

Wouldnt it be cool if they could actullay make an engine with clear parts like that.

BlackV62K2 02-13-2009 01:40 AM

The clear part on top of the SC would be sweet. Quite impressive. Hyundai is definitely starting to turn the brand image into something better.

SUPER (SEGA) GENESIS!!! We can get a blue one and call it SONIC!

hamhead 02-13-2009 01:45 AM

i think the clear parts are to display the internals only.. i mean.. its plastic.. it would melt/break apart if used on a real engine

Actually it is possible. Some people are running Lexan valve covers, but I highly doubt Hyundai would put the clear shields into production. It begins to look bad real quick once you start actually using the car.

Mugen EvOlutioN 02-13-2009 07:59 AM

i recall reading a genesis article somewhere that said the tau v8 would not fit inside the engine bay :(

but i'm sure there are tuners out there that would figure some way to make it work

Volvo-brickster 02-14-2009 07:06 PM

lets see, more horsepower than...

Jaguar's blown V8
Range Rover's blown V8
BMW's TT V8
BMW's N/A V8
Merc's N/A 6.2L V8 ( barely )

Not shabby.

At least there are a few Detroit build V8's ahead of them lol
