According to RCMP, Van Rootselaar had a firearms licence which expired in 2024. An RCMP spokesperson said firearms had been seized two years ago from the family home under the Criminal Code but the lawful owner of the weapons petitioned for their return.

So this person previously had a minor's license. Sounds like the person that owned the guns, never properly locked them up or still let the shooter have access to them.

Yeah I have a 9 year old. But this didn't move my fear-o-meter up at all of this could happen in my kids' school. Honestly.

Tumbler ridge being a northern rural community, I'm sure a lot more gun owners, and probably taking far more liberties with their storage and use than suburban Victoria.

Outside of Vancouver, Victoria, and to an extent Kelowna, things are very different.

Not sure, I guess I should ask my kids. I thought it was a US school thing, but glad to hear that it's also done here. But I'm so old now that when Columbine happened, I was practically done at Uni, so never experienced doing those drills myself.

Heard one school admin say that yes, they do lock down drills but just think about the last time your office had a fire drill ... how much attention were you paying to that?

Not saying it doesn't help but do it for one year, do it for another, for 99% of schools, nothing happens, then the time that it is for real, you think to yourself ... 'is this a drill?' ... no, hell this is real ... wtf do I do?

Police say that releasing the identities aims to support healing and to help the community move forward together.

The six victims killed in the town’s high school are:

Abel Mwansa: 12-years-old
Ezekiel Schofield: 13-years-old
Kylie Smith: 12-years-old
Zoey Benoit: 12-years-old
Ticaria Lampert: 12-years-old
Shannda Aviugana-Durand: 39-years-old

The two victims who were shot dead in a home on Fellers Avenue are:

Emmett Jacobs: 11-years-old
Jennifer Jacobs: 39-years-old

“The BC RCMP offers sincere condolences to the families who have lost loved ones, and to the entire Tumbler Ridge community that is grieving alongside them,” Deputy Commissioner Dwayne McDonald, BC RCMP Commanding Officer, said in a written statement.

I do the lock down drill twice a year and the kids take SUPER seriously when it's totally NOT announced.

Fire drill is meh

Anyone watched the memorial service/vigil at Tumbler Ridge tonight? Must give the PM, PP, Eby, and other leaders kudos for setting aside their partisan lines and at least be united in this. You will never see that in the US. First of all, they could never attend all of the school mass shootings that happen in the US !!

The united front of political leaders can tell you so much of a character of a country’s people when a nation faces tragedy or adversity.

Canada is behind the people of Tumbler Ridge!
