Nah... they do give you the services. There were some suites in the apartment building I live in that had some of those sex workers and they advertise on Craigslist too and got busted a few weeks back.

They had 23 employees in 2007, and were the 7th ranked site in terms of page views.

yes 23 employees... but pretty much still the same idea/site before 2007. Just expended to more cities. With over 9 billion page views per month... they can be so much more.

eBay only has a 25% stake in craigslist. I'm not sure if they still have that.

edit: and to the opening poster, I think you are part of a very small number of people who thinks that craigslist sucks. like everyone else here, I've found craigslist to be a great place to buy and sell stuff. I sold a car on craigslist with much success. it didn't cost me ANYTHING to list. my most recent purchase from craigslist was a great great deal on a 2009 Burton snowboard/binding package.

hotjoint 02-19-2009 06:49 AM

craigslist is awesome

syee 02-19-2009 08:33 AM

I'm with everyone else. It's a great place to buy and sell stuff. You have the occasional lowballer (but that happens with any buy/sell medium - not just CL)

The main thing for sellers is that it's got a big audience base so you're more likely to find a buyer than say handing out flyers or advertising in newspaper classifieds. Second, it's free so there's really nothing to lose here other than a few minutes of your time to create the posting.

Buyers get a single place that has lots of sellers that are local so they don't have to hassle with shipping and such (like you do with eBay). You can haggle, barter or whatever you like to get a price you like.

As for the site's design, like others have said - it's simple, and it works. Hell, some of the Internets most successful sites are very simple and basic. Take for example Google. The Google main page has their logo and a search box. Nothing else. No flash, no screen full of text. Sheer simplicity at it's finest. It was one of the early reasons why people adopted Google (well, that and their superior search capabilities). Sure CL doesn't look the greatest, but it's effective and that's what counts.

hehe...well, to be honest, the market will pay what the market will support. People are free to post whatever price they want, although it's always advisable to do your homework first before posting a price.

They can post whatever ridiculous price they want, but if nobody buys it, they're going to have to reconsider their price. If I find something I want, but the price isn't right, I'll usually give them an offer price, and something to compare it to (i.e. another ad, or retail price) to give them a reality check.

I'm not one of those people that craps on someone else's ad - I think that's an asshole thing to do (just like how it's not tolerated here on RS). If someone is willing to pay their higher price, then more power to them is what I think...

i sell my textbooks on CL too. nice and easy site to use

good point its just that I'm not the type of guy who would be looking for a roomate with someone randomly off an internet classifieds ad. I think it would be better say if you got recommendations from friends or friend of a friend.
At least then you know someone can vouch for that person in some way. Cause in the end, you'll have to be living with these roomates and you never know they could have mental issues or extremely bad habits or whatever

Sure... if you can find a roommate through direct referrals, that'll always be preferable... but obviously many people can't, so they have to resort to other methods... and basically, the point is Craigslist is no worse than placing a newspaper ad or posting on a bulletin board.

You have to do your due diligence... and ask for references if you can.

But there's really no reason to hate on Craigslist... it's good for both sellers and buyers.

I happen to be using it a lot lately to get rid of stuff I don't need that I've had sitting around for a long time.

I just sold a 19" LCD monitor for $140! LoL... where else would I be able to fetch a price like that and not pay any fees? Nowhere!

Vansterdam 02-19-2009 02:11 PM

i made alot of money on craigslist throughout my highschool years, found some killer deals to that you just can't find in any store or online, also help me find jobs

erotic service ftw. whats there not to like?

plus its FREE

InvisibleSoul 02-19-2009 03:27 PM

Man, I'm on fire today... for some reason everyone decided to buy my stuff today. Just sold a pair of 512MB DDR400 RAM for $40... and this was after listing it on Craigslist for $38. LoL... he just went to the bank so he only had $20's, and he didn't even care I didn't have change for him.

And he wasn't even searching on Craigslist!

He found my listing through Google!

For some reason, when you do Google searches for certain items, you will matching Craigslist listings right near the very top, even if it was listed just a few hours ago... which was the case with mine.

Excellent! :D

Matsuda 02-19-2009 05:28 PM

I found my tenant on craigslist =). I'm thinking of posting my ps3 for sale on it but I'm a little weary as I've never used it to sell anything and I don't want to get my virgin ass raped by a mugger.

JSALES 02-19-2009 05:34 PM

craigslist is awesome, i can sell shit on there that i can't sell on here

I wouldn't call Google unappealing...it's just...very simple.

Logo and search box and nothing more.

I just picked up a BNIB power supply for 50% less then what ncix had it on sale for :). Damn I love craigslist

ZhangFei 02-20-2009 01:33 PM

the thing about craigslist.... shiet you gotta feel the person out before you do business with them.

if the guy types funny style or has a strange email name like nammergangster4life@hotmail.com

or sounds fucked up over the phone... don't deal with him/her!!

hahahaha

and the the rest of the story is.. i am not in town, my son/daughter/cousin/dog/.../ lives in africa and i want to buy this phone and send it to them as a graduation/wedding/sex/.../ gift. give me your paypal address and i will send you the money."

finally, some REAL people contacted me a week later and sold it for $250 CASH. =)

Craigslist was mainly made for local sales, if you want to buy stuff and get it shipped then you know what site to use.
