First DSLR

Hello everyone, I'm looking to purchase my first DSLR. I have some friends working for Nikon and can get D90 for ~ $999 CDN. Do you guys think its a good move Or should i hold back and grab a simple Rebel XSI from Futureshop?

skyxx 02-22-2009 01:27 PM

WHAT! a D90 for 999? I'd take it. :)

Matsuda 02-22-2009 01:44 PM

I think the Rebel XSI would be a better choice if its your first DSLR. It'll be easier to learn on. The price is good for the D90 though.

avinayyar 02-22-2009 01:48 PM

Yes, But i can only get one lol. Anyways, Do you think its a good move?

EDIT: How about I get D90, try it and if its too complicated I can re-sell or trade it for a Rebel XSi.

Take the D90 and don't look back. The D90 is a sweet ass camera.

Only reason to go Canon is because of the L lens, haha.

Matsuda 02-22-2009 03:01 PM

I think you should get the D90 then...and then sell it to me if you find it too complicated :D

Alphamale: Whats an "L" lens and YGPM!

Thanks everyone, My D90 should arrive tonight..Can't wait! Hope its not too complicated. I like that it can shoot videos in 720p @ 24fps :D Finally, I can video those notorious chipmunks playing in my backyard.

Keep in mind that you'll have to manually focus when shooting video. Autofocus won't work in the video mode

$999? Wow. Take it. That's about $100 more than the dealer pricing.

That depends on which L lens. Some of them do not deserve the L designation.

which L lenses? can you name them?

Soundy 02-22-2009 08:23 PM

I'm a Canon guy myself, but for that price, I'd say go for the D90 as well.

Actually, my usual advice still applies, that you should go to the store and actually try out both cameras you're looking at and make sure neither of them drives you nuts (uncomfortable controls, confusing menus - everyone's preferences are different), but that camera for that price, it's hard to go wrong.

Nikon needs a 300mm f4 VR & a 400mm f5.6 VR.

The 100-400mm and 24-105mm. The 100-400mm should not be a push/pull. It pumps dust into the lens. The lens is also not very sharp. The 24-105mm should be f2.8 like the old Tamron lens instead of f4.

Meowjin 02-23-2009 03:16 AM

the 24-105 is a solid performer on canon. Especially on their ff bodies. It's what nikon needs.

DeFactoGuy 02-23-2009 08:58 PM

ok thanks senna4ever
