So how does it know before your about to crash?
Does it constantly record but deletes what it just saw if it doesn't happen to see a car crash in a certain amount of time?

It's supposed to record sudden braking rear end etc as well.... the device stores up to 20 incidents and delete from the oldest.
I remember there was one that's FRONT and REAR, very nice.

Maybe I should rig up something similar. Get two cameras one for the front and back, hook it up to an Iphone/ Ipod Touch. Although I'll need someone to write an app for the Phone/player. Anyway, how much does this cost?

bumper.
Definitely a great product, but they need to reduce the size of it.

don't they have something like this for sale in the US? I remember my friend telling me about it and was thinking of driving down to pick it up after getting into an accident where the other guy lied, saying he didn't run a red light. fortunately my friend had 2 witnesses call it in to back my friend up.
my friend works for icbc too

The driving recorders are getting very popular in Japan. A lot of companies are making it mandatory for their company cars especially taxi companies.

Definitely a great product, but they need to reduce the size of it. | The OEM ones are smaller, but very expensive.
For example, the Honda OEM driving recorders are $550, whereas you can get aftermarket ones for less than $100. http://www.honda.co.jp/ACCESS/driverecorder/
The quality is much better tho...and covers more view |

I'm currently living in the GTA and the drivers out here are always in a rush and never signal while changing lanes. I can't count the number of times that I have almost been side swipped while going straight minding my own business. It is pretty normal for 2-3 extra cars to run a red light per cycle. At times I have almost been rear ended because I choose to follow my practice of not running red lights.
Furthermore, being counsel in a few collision litigation matters I wanted to make sure I don't get caught in the same situation as my clients. I came up with a temp solution for my Jeep (don't plan on keeping it much longer). I really wanted to mount a camera in the jeep, all the mounts were more than what I wanted to spend so I decided to make my own.
I got a 1/4" x 1.5" (i think) bolt from Home depot with 2 washers and a nut all for under a buck. I also purchased a tripod from the $ store and used the tightening nut thing from there. Total cost for my mount was under $2.00. I used my not so old, but severely disfigured from repeated drops Sony T5 digi cam. The camera doesn't have a limited time video recording function, it's limited by the battery life or space on the memory card (8 gig, lots of space).
It's mounted like you see in the pic below, and I can take the camera off the mount in seconds if I want. I also have 2 batteries for the camera so I get about 3 hours of video recording time. I don't drive much so there is usually more than enough battery life. The camera doesn't give me the option to turn off the display, or i'm sure I could get even better battery life.
When/if I get something different this summer I plan on running 4 cameras with a 250 gig dvr in the vehcile. I think i'll give the T5 a much needed retirement as well.
All the stuff to setup a camera is available off ebay for fairly cheap.
