at this point in time, with the RE01R's so insanely cheap for only *slightly* less than Z1 *Spec performance (currently at the very top in this tire class), you'd be insane not to go for them.

get the RE01R, if tirerack still has it in your size.

if they don't, then i have some more questions for you:
-do you plan to race competitively on these tires?
-are you autocrossing or tracking, or both?
-how serious are you about the above?
-do you daily drive on these tires?

btw you missed the Toyo R1R's - they're new, and they're in this class.

Nitto NT-05 are also in this class. I hear they are THE shit right now, even better than star spec . Not sure if tirerack carries them though. If you are not racing competitively then get the stones. Don't get hankook.

The Kumho XS replaces the old MX's.
The Hankook R-S2 is an older tire but is pretty good in the wet.
The Azenis was the hot tire in the dry but in the wet they are pretty brutal.
The best tire at the momment is the Star Spec Z1 and closely followed by the RE-01R. Remember, the RE-01R is being replaced by the RE-11R.

What are you using them for?

They are all very good tires for the street, Azenis being the worst in wet conditions.

The RE01's should be an excellent price since they are discontinued.....IF you can find them. Tire Rack is pretty well sold out.
The jury is still out on which is best...the XS's or the RE11's. Check next months GRM.
The Azenis are at the bottom of the heap now, and the Dunlops are in the middle.
New Yoke's and Kook's still to come.
heres the new Kooks:

I bought the RE01R :P

Excellent....my size is gone.

I'd go for the Potenza's for sure, of the Z1's as a second choice.

Is Tire Rack/ Discount Tire the best prices right now for the * specs?

spigot52 04-02-2009 04:50 PM

If you are getting them shipped to Blaine or Point Roberts, Discount Tire is about $40.00US a set cheaper.
