US civic si is CDN SIR?? Hi guys, confused newb here, please help. I'm looking to buy a quick, fun civicSI, either a 99-00 or 01-05. When I look up the specs i get US data, which says 160hp motor, either in a 1.6 or a 2.0L repesectivley. But I am informed that canadian si models in these years use the EX model motor that has only ~130Hp. If i want 160hp i need a canadian SIR??? Also combine this with all the yahoos that "convert" their car to "Si" and advertise as such makes this all very confusing. In canada does the 01+ SIR ONLY come in hatch? No SIR coupe? And a side question, which body style? I kinda like the look of the 01 hatch but im also told the 99-00 siR is the better car. thanks |
Yes, the 99-00 SIR in Cananda is the same as the 99-00 SI in the US. That is the EK coupe body style. 01-02 was the hatchback EP3 with the dash mounted shifter. 99-00 had the 160 hp B16 vtec motor while the EP3 had the 160 hp 2.0 base RSX motor. EK is the better car as it has independant front and rear suspension while the EP3 got Mcstruts. |

so I test drove a 2000 sir with 155,000 kms. As suspected the car drove very nicely. Nice handling, brakes felt great, i cant say i was blown away by the 160 hp but the 8K redline was nice. The factory sir rims were stolen so the car comes with these ok 11 spoke 15" alloys. My only major hangup is that this body style is a bit dated and the car is 9 years old. Honda been making this body since 96 and is getting a bit long in the tooth. Seller would probably take $6500 CDN. Option 2 is a 2003 civic si coupe. 125,000 kms original owner. Nice aftermarket 17" wheels and I also get the factory 15" alloys i could use for snow tires. This car did not drive as nice as the sir but I do like the look of the car a bit better. Seller will take $6700CDN. The price of this car is a good deal, i think the owner could get $1000+ more and I like the idea of a 2003 as its newer than I though I could afford. So the dilema.... which to get? The 2000 sir would be a fun driver but the 2003 is a little more mature look for a guy in his mid 30's.... option 3 is to hold out but ive been scouring the local marjetplace and these are by far the best deals currently available. wachu guys think? |

meh.... abs is for hacks who cant modulate their brakes. As the car gets older its another thing to go wrong. bcaa inspection... hmmm what are they gonna tell me that the rear brakes are down to 40%? Unless theyre doing a compression test what real value is there? Im a capable diy mechanic so the little stuff is no biggie. provided both cars are good which style should i get? Merrits of either ? |
Id say get the one thats more fun to drive. Alot more rewarding in the long run, although the outdated interior will get to you at times. When you get the person to check it out, check for signs of modifications. Mods arent bad, but generally when people sell cars, they take the mods out, and do a half ass job putting stuff back together. |

what are your future plans with it? the 03 SI has a D motor that really... well.. sucks... you can put a shit load of money into it and it still won't go "fast" or you can pay big money to swap in a K motor in it. Then we're talking. The 00 SIR on the other hand has the B motor which is quite common well known, and has lots of potential. Suspension wise. The Mac strut on the 03... Well I've had some bad experiences upon lowering them, mainly because where the tie rod is. So when it comes to lowering you can only go so low before you run into big problems such as bump steer. Correctable but just more stuff to deal with. In my opinion the SIR will be a much more fun for you in the long run if you plan on doing some mods and making it go. The SI on the other hand seems like a great car to make LOOK nice... and go kinda fast. Depends on your plans. |
Personally, even though the SiR is older, it would still be my choice. I have a soft spot for those cars. Even being 10 years old now, they still look nice. Plus, it comes with a motor that has way more potenial. There are TONS of aftermarket goodies for that B16. It wouldn't take much to wake up that motor to a point where you'd be a bit more happy with it. My g/f drives an '02 Si. Although a nice car, I don't think it's any nicer than an SiR. I'm not a huge fan of the styling, but to each their own. It's too bad the SiR didn't come the factory rims :( |
realistically i wont do anything to the motor...just drive it to work and back 60kms each day. so the fact that there is a large aftermarket for the b16 doenst really come into play. Money does however...sir needs 91 octane and the insurance is more expensive if im not mistaken. provided i can get the 03 to feel as tight in the corners or as close to the sir i should be content. yeah i really liked the factory sir rims too bad. |
