Food to eat when sick with diarhea

As the title blatantly states, what foods can one eat safely when they have the runs? I've been going hungry since Friday. Occasionally having granola bars here and there, but nothing seems to like me too much. I'm going to try some congee later, hopefully that will go better. But any suggestions in the mean time?

Stick to light broth, crackers, toast, congee, anything light and easy to digest.

Shy away from bold flavors, too salty, sweet, oily, heavy, fried, too sour, too spicy. Stay away from dairy. Oh and avoid sticky rice.

You lose water and electrolytes (potassium and sodium) when you have diarrhea, so it is essential to drink water and Gatorade, etc., to replenish. Alternately, eat bananas for potassium and drink chicken broth as it is a rich source of sodium.

Rice, congee, are good.

Why avoid sticky rice, girl? I was under the impression it was absolutely ideal ?

Thanks a lot. I had the missus convince me to make smokies for dinner. Guess the grilled onion and roast garlic didn't help either. tasted great, but I'll pay for it later. v_v Back to oatmeal and congee tomorrow.

this is true, when I was diagnosed with salmonella my doc told me to eat bananas to make up for some of the nutrients I was losing by running to the bathroom every 30 min-1 hour for the first 24 hour period

Congee with preserved egg and pork meat, along with chinese donuts yumm.

donot521 03-10-2009 02:21 PM

Steamed rice, bread...stuff that's starchy.

IMO soup will come out even faster haha

B.R.A.T diet : Banana, Rice, Apple Sauce, Toast.

Drink water., water and water ( can add 1tsp salt, 1 tsp baking soda)

Don't drink gatorade (just full of sugar, nothing good for your already shitty digestive tract), instead buy "Recharge" a natural electrolyte replacement.

cook anything, leave it out at room temp for 4-5 hours then eat it. And say hello to the toilet lol

dicecube 03-10-2009 09:06 PM

Burritos, tacos, chilis (anything with beans help)

7-up does help, but only if you add salt to it. Has effects similar to tums and makes you burp/fart instead of liquid crapping yourself.

follow with congee + lean pork and/or dried oysters.

go to T&T and buy Pocari Sweat. that'll rehydrate you better than anything out there and will taste a lot better than medical stuff like pedialyte or glucolyte.
take in as much fluids as you can and flush it all out. try to relax too it'll help you flush.
