I've been thinking of getting one of these but havn't known anyone that has tried one. Are you with Shaw by chance and if so how many channels can you get from them with this?

lacubrious1 03-23-2009 10:02 AM

I have Shaw, and I get all the channels I'm suppose to get.

I have one of these, it works great, but Shaw scrambles their HD channels, so you won't tune any of those. Works with all the local over-the-air HD channels tho, for free HD. CBC actually looks better OTA than it does on Shaw, because it's not compressed nearly as much. $100 is a good price.

Can you still at least connect to Shaw's converter box?

Soundy 08-02-2009 05:37 PM

It has a video-in (composite and S-video) that you can connect to the video out on the Shaw box to record the descrambled and digital channels, but it won't record them in HD.

Edit: just to clarify (since I went through a lot of hacking with this thing already)...

- The HD tuner supports ATSC (over-the-air) and ClearQAM (cable).

- Shaw uses QAM for its HD, so it will TUNE the channels and you can get the audio, but the signal is encrypted, so there's no video.

- Most local stations are now broadcasting an ATSC (digital) signal, so you can tune them with an antenna, IF you have a clear shot at Mt. Seymour. Most of those are now HD (the only one that isn't HD, of those I've been able to pick up, is KVOS in Bellingham; they broadcast 480p).

- And again, because the signal is NOT hideously compressed like it is with cable, the HD channels you do get tend to be a lot cleaner and clearer than with cable. It's REALLY noticeable with hockey on CBC.

You're really tempting me to build another media box, here... that's a great price. Someone else snap it up quick, before I'm forced to buy it and get in crap for blowing more money on technology!
