How to remove rust from wheel stud?

I've got some polished lugnuts that got rust into them from the wheel studs, now while i can wire wheel the wheel stud itself.... how do i get rid of the bled on rust without damaging the lugnuts? I'd try soaking it in CLR but i'm worried it will hurt the finish of the polish....

The CLR shouldnt hurt the lugs as I will sometimes use a mild wheel acid to remove rust spots from chrome wheels, bumpers etc with no ill effects. Just do one or two to begin with but you should be ok.
