What's there to show for it?

Alphamale 03-12-2009 11:42 AM

Savages will be savages. Monkeys will be monkeys.

Sir, you obviously have that wrong.

I'm a misanthrope. I do not differentiate between races, I hate the entire spectrum of humanity.

We need to get the launch codes.

INteresting video, that book is going on my to-read list.

Of course, the thread title, and the description given by the person who posted the video, are hilariously dishonest and misleading. Which isn't exactly surprising considering it is a Jason00S2000 thread.

So, lets see:

Quote:

More than $1 trillion dollars given by Europe and North America to black african nations have gone up in smoke and there's nothing to show for it, nobody knows what they did with it. Africa is still the poorest most backward continent in the world.
This is pretty funny, considering the video actually spells out where the money has gone.

When you give money to dictators who hoard it to themselves to pay their armies to keep them in power, and then the little that does trickle down to the people has to help them overcome murder squads, droughts and disease epidemics, it's not really surprising that "nothing has been done"

Add in the fact that other countries and corporations are still in the area actively making things worse, and well, there you go.

Quote:

By contrast the $50 billion given by the USA to Europe under the "Marshall Plan" after WW2 made the continent stand on its feet and become the More.. wealthiest continent in the world.
Fucking LOL. Yeah, who would have thought world superpowers with educated citizens and business infrastructure that was still largely intact would be able to right itself so quickly

What are you talking about?

Are you trying to suggest that it benefits private corporations and other governments to keep Africa destabilized to rape them of resources for pennies on the dollar?

Please adjust your tinfoil hat, LOL!!!!!

Alphamale 03-12-2009 06:32 PM

I think he's saying that they just don't really have any incentive to stabilize Africa at all, which is pretty much true. If it ain't broked, don't fix it.

Africa is the most resource-rich continent on earth, of course they want to stabilize it and drive up the value of the local currency, and then they can... err... pay more for resources, uhmm... and... uhhhh

It's like you suggest that first world nations don't have the best in mind for the people of Africa?

Jason00S2000 03-12-2009 06:51 PM

The Congo, for example, is probably THE most resource rich country in Africa, look at the years of peace and prosperity they enjoy there.

Alphamale 03-12-2009 07:27 PM

I guess your terms of peace and prosperity are relative to the rest of Africa? Quickly scanning wiki, both DRC and Republic of Congo don't exactly possess the "features" of Western social values (that is if you consider Western social values as one of the best, relatively speaking). But using the congo as and example doesn't necessarily help the argument unless we can see what fraction of the injected funds was directed to the countries in question, after that can we make a decision on the state of affairs. Coming do a decision based on foreign aid on an entire continent is much too callous, kinda like the monkeys that live there.

BoneThug 03-12-2009 07:52 PM

you know there is 50 + countries in africa right? do the division, pick an individual country, then judge it that way

Alphamale 03-13-2009 01:36 AM

I like how people on RS never wander into these kinds of threads. It's either because they don't know what to talk about or they think it's futile. Regardless, it's an issue that more people should be concerned or at least more knowledgeable about.

Why do you think the governments of the world can steal so much, and lie so much, and get away with it?

Apathetic, dumbed down civilians, and politicians that jump on populist, hot-button topics to grab votes.

hotjoint 03-13-2009 07:22 AM

interesting

achiam 03-13-2009 03:07 PM

The problem with Africa is that everyone is looking after themselves.
Nigeria and Congo are very resource rich, but all the money has been diverted to local government officials through corruption and bribery etc.
First the white man went in and had their way.
Now its the Chinese that are pillaging the Congo.
Its ridiculous and sad that when 1000 Palestinians were killed it blew up on the media.
But the reality is that 5,000,000 people have died in the Congo over the past 10 years - of which I honestly don't recall ever seeing that on any mainstream cable outlet.

underscore 03-13-2009 03:46 PM

I still laugh at the stupid idea Bono had to get a few countries to forget debt from Africa to help out the poor. Err, that doesn't help the poor, that just helps the already corrupt and rich gov't you idiot.

Generally speaking, I think society often has very strong opinions on topics they have NO idea about.

"stemcell research is bad."
"the economic stimulus is going to hurt us."

to drop a relevant cliche phrase, silence IS golden... or at least until you learn the facts and get educated before talking ...
