death is a pretty serious thing, once you're dead, there's no going back. cant apologize and be alive again, thats it for eternity. this kid may have been influenced by rap, neglected as a child, etc. death is the ultimate punishment. if you're going to kill a guy for breaking into your home, why not kill people who steal office supplies from work or time theft (ie slack off)? they're thieves too, just to a different entity.
